I have a terrible sense of direction. That's probably why I got a PhD.

Hey #ChemSky - I'm putting together the #Newscripts holiday gift guide for @cenmag.bsky.social. Have you given or received a great chemistry-themed gift recently? I'd love to know about it and maybe include it on our list. Here's last year's guide for ideas:

I’m impressed the article restrained from using the word AI and opted for machine learning. I remember the 90s when they called them neural networks haha.

Essentially what Donald Knuth argued in the March 1998 issue of the Notices of the American Mathematical Society. His letter is reproduced here:

To prove the power rule for derivatives, you don't need the full binomial theorem, just that

(x+h)ⁿ = xⁿ + nxⁿ⁻¹h + O(h²).

I think that's a much easier sell!

I used to be obsessed with #energy and #sustainability in the 2010s and dove deep into the subject back then. I co-wrote 3 books on the subject. My last one on energy efficiency was picked up by Elsevier. I always thought it was priced to never sell. Oh well. shop.elsevier.com/books/energy...
