The 'kin' of ‘napkin’ means "little."

‘Nap’ comes from ‘nape,' which means “tablecloth.”

So a napkin is a little tablecloth.

This ends up evoking a fascinating conversation in the comments. How beauteous mankind is! O brave new world, That has such people in't!"—Shakespeare, in case you're haunted. The Tempest. Anyway. The conversation is delightful and informative.
I was thinking about what gifts people used to give to readers (besides gift editions of famous poets' work and illustrated histories of wars and such), and while I was thinking about it, somebody brought a book to the counter....

Loving leaf sheep this morning. Costasiella kuroshimae. Tiny, adorable sea slugs look like sheep and photosynthesize by stealing chloroplasts from the algae they eat, making them one of the few animals that can create their own food from sunlight.

The North American Aerospace Defense Command tracks Santa’s sleigh ever since a child in 1955 tried to call Santa and accidentally reached a colonel at the Continental Air Defense Command.

It's never a waste of good time to spend a couple minutes with Suzanna on her farm in Ireland. ❤️🙏
Today was a miserably wet day, I also had a flat tire in pouring rain from a hedge cutting chip but this evening’s skies were so worth it. Just stunning and this video doesn’t do them justice.

The sound of their chatter. ❤️ The color of the lake. The mountains.

Thanks Mamady.
In my excitement at finally seeing these Tibetan Snowcocks, I took neither a good photo nor a video! This was up at 17,000 ft with Gokyo Lake below and Everest somewhere in the background!

This one. #HeatherCoxRichardson, on Substack lately, necessarily, has been a fire hose of dark news, a thousand daggar stabs to the heart. This is politically uplifting, from a Rob Reiner movie.
