The list of things you don’t understand is long, but it includes “football” which is not in fact “on”

So we’re not mourning music itself. Sheesh. Not even mourning MTV.

Or, said another way: if it was good when you were 17 and bad when you were 22? Let me guess. Baseball was also great between YOUR ages of 13 and 17. The college you went to peaked when you were there. SNL “lost its edge” when YOU turned 25.

If it holds a special place in your heart, I assure you: you’re 50.

I’ll be sad to see MTV goes when it does (and, again, it isn’t going, yet), but it was always a tastemaker with no taste. Corporate and racist and obnoxious. Really only had 10 good years, and those were 30 years ago.

You could make your own (superior) MTV, right now, out of YouTube scraps. And it’s not worth the time even because that algorithm (ew) is so good.

Bands that could never make videos can now shoot them and edit them on their free phones. 4K HDR. Even bands that could before: now they have direct (free) distribution.

There are dedicated streaming services for live music. Concerts. No, like videos. I’m serious.

Critical takes on music and video? Right there. Long-tail fandoms and communities around genre? Better than it ever has been.
December 31, 2025 at 2:35 PM
Want to watch anything? You can. Any video from history (pretty much)? Right there. Want to watch a band’s discography, or have the algorithm (ew) pick other things you might like / haven’t seen? Done.

And for all the mourning today (maybe you all are in the U.K., I don’t know), we’re really in a golden era of music video. I swear.

Timberwolves host the Wizards, which makes life hard for those of us thinking about seeing Pigeons Playing Ping Pong or Wine Lips in the same couple of blocks of Minneapolis
