Cosmologists Try a New Way to Measure the Shape of the Universe | Quanta Magazine
Is the universe flat and infinite, or something more complex? We can’t say for sure, but a new search strategy is mapping out the subtle signals that would reveal if the universe had a shape.

I am really frustrated that the press is discussing the destruction of USAID as something that has happened rather than an illegal action that will likely be undone in two weeks when courts tell the world that it was illegal.

Here’s a view of Uranus’ moon Miranda, a 470 km-wide spheroid of ice and rock with some of the most contorted terrain in the Solar System. This view comprises 8 images captured by Voyager 2 on January 24, 1986 from 32,000 km away.

A month or so ago I saw a post by someone saying "we should all admit that Neil Gaiman has always been a shitty writer." That whole knee jerk revisionism. No, man, that's part of the whole horror. He's an internationally recognized writer. Objectively a good writer. But he's also a fucking monster.

High-altitude clouds.

So what?

Well, these clouds are made of methane ice crystals and they're on Neptune. And they're about 50 km above the bluer cloud deck below them.

Bit chilly at the moment? 🥶

One hour ago, the Parker Solar Probe experienced a temperature of 1,000C 🥵 as it skimmed through the Sun's atmosphere, the closest humanity has ever been to a star.

We'll find out in three days if it survived when it hopefully sends a short beacon tone back to Earth!
In about three hours, NASA's Parker Solar Probe will swoop just 4 million miles above the Sun at 0.064% the speed of light.

It's the first of three final dives that will bring the spacecraft closer to a star than we've ever visited.

This year felt very unproductive due to health reasons, physical and mental. But I had my first surgery, did therapy for the first time, made art that felt more honest than ever. I gained skills and strength I didn't have before and that feels good going into 2025.
