Good Morning. The furnace stopped working in the middle of the night. Merry Xmas.

p.s. Anyone know an honest and competent furnace repair person, in Winnipeg, who works on Xmas day?

The 20 lb turkey has been in the fridge for 2 days and is still hard as a rock. I am feeding at least a dozen on the 25th, with an assist from my BIL. I probably should get off my butt, and get the last odds and ends (fresh veggies, etc) but I am stretching out my morning coffee. Rough night.

The White House says the Kennedy Center board vote was “unanimous”…

BULLSHIT.

@repbeatty.bsky.social, a Congressional member of the board, was on the call. They muted her and didn't let her voice opposition.

This is beyond absurd, totally illegal, and a disgrace to the memory and legacy of JFK.

This morning I have decided that I am not a lazy, unmotivated housekeeper. Instead I am a frontrunner in a new form of bespoke archeology.

Perhaps this isn't so shocking after all.

Opinion: Convenience stores — the seeds of new neighbourhoods
The COVID-19 pandemic was a gut punch to downtown Winnipeg. No area of the city felt such devastating impacts, and even a few years later it remains the place struggling most to regain its former mome...

Don't know what's up but tonight, in my Youtube feed, I keep seeing music reactors reviewing Clash songs. And they are all recent videos. Something in the air?

I just remembered Fraser Vale fish and chips from my childhood. Indifferent breaded fish and nasty chips heated in an oven and served on Melmac dishes with jelly glass of whatever beverage we had available (Kool-aid or something similar). Ketchup was critical to swallowing it.

30+ kids last night before we ran out of treats. As it was, the last 6 kids only got 2 treats each instead of 4. This year I had cut back on how much candy I would hand out because we always had far too much. Between reduced package sizes and more kids, we ran out for the first time in 30+ years.

I suspect toothpick sales have soared in Canada today, as Blue Jays fans try to stay awake at work. This is probably as dangerous a day to drive in Canada as after the time change in the Spring (for those provinces who still do it).

I am getting a kick out of my wife and one of my sons discussing strategy for Balatro. She still has one joker to unlock and only 5 challenges left. They were discussing the 20th challenge if I understand correctly.

Last night it was the Blue Jays. I love these little moments.

I bought some black lentils the other day (they were in the Manitoba section at the local Co-Op). I have never tried them before but I assumed I could just use them like red lentils (as a thickener in soups/stews. Am I wrong?

There is a hole along side the house where the tulips used to be. They had been planted by the previous owner and had been there at least 30 years (probably more). Damn deer (or squirrel or both).

Made homemade congee again last night. The first time I made it, I used a random recipe from the internet. Since then I just add in whatever seems like a good idea.

Left over cooked chicken, sure. Some slightly stale garden carrots, sure. Left over pan fried potatoes, sure.

It all seems to work.

OTTAWA - After members of the Canadian Parliament earlier today gave a standing ovation to recently deceased far-right agitator who touted white supremacist theories, Charlie Kirk, we here at The Beaverton are stuck trying to figure out if there’s literally anyone our elected officials won’t celebrate.

I expect the shooter to be someone on the right wing. Likely disillusioned by what they have seen from the people they previously supported. I also expect the shooter has a military background but is not a sniper or even a sharpshooter. A single shot and no bystanders hit. That took some skill.
