This is a map of northern Canadian localities my group has studied mayflies from - I've had the great fortune to visit most of these and collect them myself, though some are from a study of archived specimens from various studies.
An aquatic entomologist sorting mayflies and stoneflies from a sample taken along the Horton River in arctic Canada. She is crouched on the ground looking at a sample tub, with three heavily loaded red canoes at the edge of the Horton River in the background. Map of northern Canada with a number of red dots on it, showing sampling localities where mayflies were collected.

🚨PhD opportunity w/ @venditti.bsky.social and @watershedlab.bsky.social on sediment supply and transport in mountain watersheds in the Canadian Rocky Mountains. 🧪⚒️ Full ad: www.dropbox.com/scl/fi/jo09s...
The River Dynamics Laboratory at Simon Fraser University, in collaboration with WaterSHED lab at the University of Calgary (https://ucalgary.ca/labs/waterSHED), seeks a PhD student to work on sediment supply in mountain drainage basins in the Rocky Mountains. The candidate would develop and validate a morphodynamic model of changes in river channels caused by coarse sediment delivery by landslides. The candidate will join a large group of students and postdocs at Simon Fraser University and the University of Calgary with expertise in river geomorphology and natural hazards.
The PhD candidate will:
1) Build a one-dimensional numerical model to predict channel evolution that is based on the Parker family of morphodynamic models
2) Collect topographic and sediment texture information to parametrize model in the field
3) Validate the model using channel profiles and newly acquired lidar
4) Experiment with the model to explore sediment removal and augmentation strategies
Minimum qualifications include:
1) A Masters degree in Geology, Engineering, Environmental Science, or Physical Geography
2) Excellent organizational, communication, and problem-solving skills, and attention to detail
3) Experience with hydraulic and/or morphodynamic modelling.

Hydrology Paper of the Day @akoshkin.bsky.social @hydro-adrienne.bsky.social on how wildfires affected by climate change remove trees and also affect snowpack hydroclimatology: changes in annual snow disappearance date related to location, radiation, temperature, elevation, and time since burn.

Super excited to have this work out showing how snowmelt timing changes in burned forests across the west. Big congrats to @akoshkin.bsky.social on leading this! 🎉

I do love bees and stoneflies, but how about the Lake Emerald (Somatochlora cingulata), the Common Loon of dragonflies?

Water associated insects! Really lucked out to see the ones underwater and to catch the water strider while it zoomed around on water. The dragonfly nymph was especially exciting for me ! But the water boatman just floating and hanging out was very cool too. #nerdingout. #aquaticlife

In addition to this amazing selection of gear from Donna, the silent auction will also include several bags I made out of scraps leftover from my early-pandemic era mask-making: laptop/tablet sleeve, pencil cases, change purses, etc. (more than in this photo).

Hey pals. What’s the difference between a dirty bus stop and a lobster with breast implants?

One is a crusty bus station and the other is a busty crustacean
