The central puzzle is why did Musk and Trump fight a war when a division of Mars would have left them both better off?

Publication day for our long, long awaited article in @apsrjournal.bsky.social on the effects of community policing on police officers' own attitudes about the community!

🧵 Proud to share our new paper in @apsrjournal.bsky.social (open access)!

We used a field experiment to test how contact with citizens shapes POLICE OFFICER attitudes then developed inductive theory about when it works v. backfires.

Paper w/ @matthewjnanes.bsky.social & @nicoravanilla.bsky.social

Just published on APSR First View: "How Does Community Policing Affect Police Attitudes? An Experimental Test and a Theory of Bureaucrat-Citizen Contact" by Dotan Haim, Matthew Nanes, and Nico Ravanilla. www.cambridge.org/core/journal...

Some takeaways:

A. Bureaucrats' attitudes are crucial outcomes! They shape how they do their jobs.

B. Field experiments are powerful, but we can learn even more by capturing unexpected insights that lead to new inductive theories.

C. Huge undertaking by our partners and staff. We're SO grateful.

Community policing improved officer understanding of citizens' concerns but not trust, empathy, or accountability.

But we noticed that certain officers reacted very differently! We theorize that social contact 1) helps "unembedded" bureaucrats but 2) backfires when it heightens safety concerns.

Hey Tim, I hadn't realized this until now, but I think because this was a polisky sub feed (which is now defunct), new folks can't be added to the list. I'll look into the best way to fix that!

I am thinking of making my DiD materials that I used for teaching in the last 5 years available.

I am hoping these would find begineers in need of a step-by-step opinionated walkthrough of several developments

Let’s see if I find the energy to do this!

1/ 🤔 Ever wondered if pairing socially isolated students with popular peers helps or hurts their outcomes?

My job market paper explores this through a large-scale RCT across Indian schools.

Dear friends: The ESOC (Empirical Studies of Conflict) is coming to Taipei next June! Renard and I are helping organize the conference this time around, and there will be “lots of” cool people (no spoilers!) attending it and presenting their newest research on conflict.
