Mike X Cohen recently wrote about why he left academia and neuroscience.

Why I Haven’t Left, explores another side of that story.

AI isn’t a rupture but the next literacy—layered on top of talking, listening, and movement. The challenge is to integrate it without losing the skills that make us human.

AI as the Next Literacy
AI won’t replace the basics of learning any more than reading replaced listening. Like literacy, it’s a new layer built on the old foundations that make us human.

We’ve built a system that’s really good for scientists to produce papers,” said Dr. Robert Cook-Deegan, a professor at ASU and one of the most influential scholars of N.I.H. reform, “but we haven’t produced a system that’s really good at translating those papers into health outcomes.”

While working on my own memoir, this flyer landed in my inbox: “Helping busy people tell meaningful stories.” The business of ghostwritten memoirs is booming.

Despite the temptation to outsource, there are some things no one can narrate for me.

If you need a little hope this morning - the current tween trend involves decorating clothespins with affirming messages, then clipping them on friends' backpacks when they're not looking.

Here are a few that my 11-year-old decorated this weekend ❤️
Clothespins decorated with paint markers and pens, with affirming messages. Like "bee you" with a drawing of a bee. And "you're sweeter than pie" with a checked motif. And "you can do it" and "unleash your creativity."

We live in an era of overproduction—AI, social media, megaphones everywhere. My new piece, “The Whisperers,” is about choosing a different path: words that don’t scream, but whisper.

Glasford & Brown show us how resources define status in academia. With AI and political attacks shaking the system, the “academic galaxy” is trembling.

We stopped at the giant ram on our roadtrip and Hugo insisted we take a picture.

In 1994, I found myself “behind enemy lines” at a Montreal conference on the so-called grammar gene. Years later, in Liz Bates’s classroom, I finally saw the light

This 🧵 is about a new paper,

"This article is not just in English: Making science more inclusive and impactful with artificial intelligence translation"

This 🧵 describes the collaborative review process the authors & the journal went through to get this paper published in 5 different languages.

Our new paper, led by Andrew Burton-Jones, argues English-only science is unfair, costly and may no longer be necessary. With AI translation tools advancing rapidly, we ask what truly multilingual science could look like and how we might get there.

It’s the pronunciation that throws you. Indict should be pronounced like predict. They have the same root. Does that help?
