The International Day of Sign Languages celebrates the linguistic identities of the Deaf community and all who use sign language. John Bulwer was the first person in Britain to advocate for the education of deaf people. His 1644 book explores the communicative and rhetorical power of hand gestures.

Yet another demonstration that AI is not a labor-saving device; it merely displaces the cleanup and mitigation (in realms where care, caution, accuracy, etc., actually matter) onto other people

All the ascendant instances of fascism, imperialism, oppression, and death-making we're seeing globally are interconnected, feeding on and gaining strength from each other. The ways we oppose those forces need to be equally interconnected and mutually empowering.

This essay considers the value of celebration and action in the face of racial injustice. It does this by asking if, 60 years after it came into force, the operation of the Race Relations Act 1965 justifies our celebration of the passing of the Act.
Short answer: No

What is there to Celebrate 60 years after the Passing of the Race Relations Act 1965?
Why should we celebrate limited progress that comes too late after more struggle than should really be necessary?

It seems a little ironic that it is still only available in print format given a large chunk of the book is about managing efficient delivery of digital content in library collections, especially for academic teaching! Will it be available in time for the new academic year in September?

Gaza is now single deadliest conflict for journalists in history.

This is not only an attempt to extinguish a whole people, it is also an attempt to extinguish the story of their genocide.

“One day, everyone will have always been against this.” - Egyptian-Canadian writer, Omar El Akkad.

The city of Beit Hanoun in the north east edge of Gaza is seen from above. It is completely destroyed, not a single building is standing. It is all rubble, as though the aftermath of a nuclear explosion. The city had a population of 52,000

Have you done some fun work with museums/archives/cultural spaces (anything beyond the academy, essentially) and want to tell people about it? Please do consider writing something for @socialhistsoc.bsky.social’s Community Exchange blog! #SHSConf2025
Screenshot for the Social History Society’s Community Exchange blog, which says:

Our Community Exchange aims to foster links across history-making spaces-from museums and archives, streets and groups, stage and screen - and to open up dialogue between the many different audiences for social history. We welcome contributions showcasing public history events, as well as think pieces on community history, co-production, or how scholarship can be transformed by conversations beyond the academy.
