Planning out some PlayStation book photo shoots this afternoon
Elly van Houten tormenting a seated Fei Fong Wong with a crucifix

I heard that apparently the game's hard mode gives enemies +20% damage dealt and allies -30% damage dealt across the board? That explains why I'm struggling so much in the early game. If all it's doing is dragging fights out with no other interesting twists, I'll just swap back to normal.

Also, an early-game tip traditional FF players might not consider: Just stock up on potions and give everyone the Item command. Buy like 90 of them so you can just use them freely without having to worry about your stock. The cost is negligible compared to the money you get from fights.

For the record, Argath lives either way. If he gets KO early on then you just don't have to worry about him the rest of the fight. It's an easier fight, not an altered story branch.

Oh I take Delita and Argath's equipment off immediately and let them soak enemy attacks until they fall over. No point in letting them gain levels. You can even attack them yourself if you want to completely keep them out of story fights as variables, though doing that on Hard backfired for me...

The other tip I remember offhand:

In the third story battle there's a guy in trouble, and you get the option to prioritize killing the bandits or saving the guy. If you say screw the guy and kill the bandits, you get an easier stage (guy dying isn't a lose condition) AND 2 free brave pts for Ramza.
dramata.bsky.social
Normally this kind of tip would be overkill in a game like Final Fantasy Tactics, but there's one story battle where Ramza has to solo a boss, so you can't just muddle around with him. He needs to have at least SOME optimized damage and survival capabilities to get through that.

If you want to steamroll the game, teach Ramza the Ninja's Dual Wield ability, Samurai's Blade Grasp, then make him a dual wield monk with Blade Grasp. Blade Grasp gives you a % chance to dodge physical attacks based on Bravery, and double-punching can quickly have you one-shotting enemies.

New to FFT? Ivalice Chronicles has a ton of nice QOL stuff, but here's a thread of some things that newer players might not know, and things that it would be useful TO know!

Comp copy day! Uncle from Another World volume 12, in which Uncle is baffled to learn of a game system that involves swinging nunchuks, someone from the Kofun Era takes issue with the era name, and we all learn about Japanese energy drink commercials from the early 90s.

Andrew Dice was a wonderful colleague, and I will sorely miss him as both a coworker and a friend. My heart goes out to Robin and all of Andrew's friends and loved ones.

I'm still blindsided.

Woolsey had even more restrictive challenges, if you'll believe it. He's shared anecdotes in interviews about how in Secret of Mana he submitted a completed script, then Square sent it back and said it wouldn't fit on the rom and he needed to pare it down to 30% of the initial text volume.

I always bring up Final Fantasy VI because pople LOVE to shit on the work Ted did there with some of the same issues that faced Alexander with FF8 but ultimately the most common mods for any port of FF6 are bringing the Ted localization back because it's so unique and nostalgic.

Sometimes you can get the PM to ask the client to organize the files better or provide speaker labels. But sometimes the client says no, and you have to just make do with what's there. If the game's already released in JP you MAY be able to check gameplay videos online. If it's in development? Nope.

TRANSLATION ADDENDUM

• Lack of file organization - Source text can be REALLY disorganized. IE: Dialogue sorted by speaker name or alphabetical order instead of the sequential order of how lines are shown in-game. Or speaker labels aren't provided and you have to guess by context and diction style.

A recent discussion I saw of FF Tactics reminded me of another huge translation pitfall I forgot to mention in this thread, so time for a new post!
dramata.bsky.social
Given Alexander Smith's anecdote about translating Final Fantasy 8 without ANY kind of script provided (having to play and record the game on VHS and transcribe it before TL could happen), I refuse to believe FF Tactics PS1's text structure was remotely coherent. I'd love to see those old workfiles.

Which isn't meant as a condemnation of the those who worked on the PSX translation, by the way. Like Anna, I suspect the problems had more to do with the translation process itself rather than a lack of skill or dedication on the part of the people involved. This thread provides examples of that:

A friend talked about a mobile game he was playing that had weird translation issues. That got me to thinking about what the cause of those issues could be, and considering the wider question of how many factors can influence a translation before even considering an individual translator's merits. 🧵
