In earth-shattering news, I agree with Lord Michael Heseltine.
bbcnewsnight.bsky.social
“You described Reform and other parties across Europe today as among the 'right wing equivalents of the fascists in the 1930s'. Why?”

“Because that’s what they are”

@vicderbyshire.bsky.social asks Lord Heseltine about remarks he made at Conservative Party Conference.

It really is just relentless the constant dehumanisation in this country. Prove you deserve to be here. Prove you deserve to be cared for. Prove your gender. Prove you deserve to have human rights. Prove you deserve to stay after a whole decade. It just chisels away at your humanity

Just fuck off with this. How about start the conversation by highlighting how much immigrants contribute to the UK - not least by propping up the NHS and social care system!

Also - forced volunteering is not volunteering, it's unpaid labour.

How out of touch does @bbcnews.bsky.social have to be to think it is news that maintenance loans do not cover living costs for 'a growing number of students'? When was the last time the maintenance loan did cover anyone's living costs?

Minister has identified the biggest problem in our Higher Education:

"Too often people go to university to ‘explore research and knowledge. I want people to go to university to start businesses in our country.”

No, big name international publisher, it is not reasonable to expect someone to review a monograph proposal (with complete manuscript) in two weeks. Even if you offer £250 worth of book vouchers.

People who aren’t paying attention don’t think anti-trans stuff matters, as they don’t know any, & think of caricatures of trans ppl on sitcoms etc. To the far right yobs it does matter. This happened in Dublin, which doesn’t have the anti-trans culture of Britain. You should care:

I am a trans woman in the UK. My most influential enemies are the guy who co-created a sitcom about Catholic priests back in the 90s, a woman who wrote some children’s books about wizards, and the prime minister.

Sometimes I feel a little crazy about this.

In the end, I managed to complete 100 miles in 7 hours and 38 minutes. Given my primary goal was to avoid embarrassing myself, I am very happy with the time.

Much more importantly, we managed to raise more than £2700 to support Medical Aid for Palestinians.

Just under 3 weeks to go now for my 100 mile bike ride in support of Medical Aid for Palesitinians, and it is starting to feel real.
Thank you to everyone for your support. It means more than you can know.
Please donate, if you can. The need is getting more urgent by the hour.

There are so many things here.

I pay taxes. I contribute. I’ve contributed to this country for fifteen years.

I also get child benefit for my *British* children - that’s not for me; it’s for them.

But maybe most important: PEOPLE’S WORTH IS NOT DEFINED BY THEIR TAX BILL.
bestforbritain.org
This really is not getting the attention it should. The Tories' latest proposal is to exclude *any household that includes any foreign national from any benefit*.

And when asked about it, they keep citing small boat crossings - a minute fraction of migration - to justify it. ~AA

Thanks to everyone's generosity, we have managed to raise >£1000 in less than a week. Please donate anything you can spare and/or signal boost. It will make such a difference to a wonderful organisation doing stellar work.

The last couple of days has been peak Labour backbenching. Make a big song-and-dance about rebelling against your government, then immediately capitulate on the basis of tiny changes, leaving deeply problematic policies to be enacted into law.

And so many amazing characters - Pilar, obviously but also I have a soft spot for Anselmo. His conversation with Robert where he says he misses God is incredible.

It's difficult to avoid the conclusion that this government hates universities. You can challenge without resorting to shock or offence. This is the language of right-wing "free speech" crusades, which invariably simply mean "I want to use slurs and get away with it". www.bbc.co.uk/news/article...
