eventually politicians need to start advocating for criminal and civil penalties for people involved in fabricating stories to get citizens incarcerated.

or, put another way: a society that would like to keep functioning has to discourage baldfaced lying, especially by authorities

I can’t believe I’m watching interviews of city mayors talking about how they are coordinating with other mayors to discuss how to protect their residents FROM THE PRESIDENT OF THE UNITED STATES

I know we are “used to it” but it is absolutely insane

I hope it's clear to everyone now that Trump really is going for it - he's trying to become a dictator. I don't know if he'll succeed, but he's working to install himself as an autocrat unaccountable to voters. And he's weaponizing the military against Americans who oppose him as part of that effort

Protest is political speech. ICE is not above criticism. Nobody should be. Vocal and direct protest against ICE actions galvanizes resistance in impacted communities; that is why the regime fears it. This is a terrible, but predictable, move.

U.S. Attorney General Pam Bondi has issued a new memo instructing several agencies within the DOJ to aid in arresting and charging people with crimes if they protest or otherwise impede actions taken by ICE agents.
Bondi Issues Memo Establishing Task Force to “Protect” ICE From Protesters
The memo directs the US Attorney’s Office to “prosecute any individual” who “impedes or intimidates” ICE officers.

“AI is the asbestos we are shoveling into the walls of our society, and our descendants will be digging it out for generations.”

This whole section really.
Finally: AI cannot do your job, but an AI salesman can 100% convince your boss to fire you and replace you with an AI that can't do your job, and when the bubble bursts, the money-hemorrhaging "foundation models" will be shut off and we'll lose the AI that can't do your job, and you will be long gone, retrained or retired or "discouraged" and out of the labor market, and no one will do your job.

Grotesque and symptomatic behavior that would seem implausible if it appeared in a political satire; a dying empire turning in on itself, saber-rattling and sending in troops to an American city to fight a « war » against the very idea of anti-fascism

Trump says he’s authorized Hegseth to use “Full Force” against Antifa in “War ravaged” Portland
At the request of Secretary of Homeland Security, Kristi Noem, I am directing Secretary of War, Pete Hegseth, to provide all necessary Troops to protect War ravaged Portland, and any of our ICE Facilities under siege from attack by Antifa, and other domestic terrorists. I am also authorizing Full Force, if necessary. Thank you for your attention to this matter!

Every few years I save up for an early modern book; just gripped this 1641 folio of Joshua Sylvester’s translation of the « Divine Weeks » of Guillaume de Salluste du Bartas - rarely read today, it’s a didactic poem on the creation of the world that was a huge hit with Renaissance readers

A fun fact about McCarthyism is that just two and a half years after he was condemned and censured, Sen. Joseph McCarthy drank himself to death at 48.

Fevers break. Petty tyrants fall. Censorship and persecution drive good people to stand together and fight back.
After his condemnation and censure, McCarthy continued to perform his senatorial duties for another two and a half years. His career as a major public figure, however, had been ruined. His colleagues in the Senate avoided him; his speeches on the Senate floor were delivered to a near-empty chamber or received with intentional and conspicuous displays of inattention.

The press that had once recorded his every public statement now ignored him, and outside speaking engagements dwindled almost to nothing. Eisenhower, finally freed of McCarthy's political intimidation, quipped to his Cabinet that McCarthyism was now
"McCarthywasm". McCarthy died in the Bethesda Naval Hospital on May 2, 1957, at the age of 48. His death certificate listed the cause of death as "Hepatitis, acute, cause
unknown"; previously doctors had not reported him to be in critical condition. It was hinted in the press that he died of alcoholism (cirrhosis of the liver), an estimation that is now accepted by modern biographers. Thomas C.
Reeves argues that he effectively died by suicide.

Only weeks after Kyle Rittenhouse was acquitted, his first big public appearance was at AmericaFest 1 where he came out to a custom song and thousands of screaming fans after the screens displayed graphic footage of his victims.
