It's kind of a necessary evil when you're interfacing with libraries that don't play well with React's lifecycle (like XHR/Fetch, some DOM stuff, and some 3rd-party libs), but outside of that, it has no legit uses.

OK. It's going to be coming out soon because of the relentless investigations of Pam Bondi and Kash Patel, so I might as well admit it before the news breaks:

I am the General Counsel of Antifa.

I'm gonna hack up a fix and call it a day, and write a tech debt ticket.

jfc the only *clean* way to fix this might involve a complete refactor of this report UI, and release is this week. 🫡

This is constantly why I reject, for personal reasons, people saying “oh have you tried making the AI do it??” Bc in the time it would take me to explain to the computer what I want to do, I could have just DONE it, and I know my results will be accurate. So like?? The fuck is the point

…Let me say that again: Expert coders using "generative AI" demonstrated a nearly 20% *increase* in their time, vs when writing code on their own; oh, and those increases are *worse* on the tasks with which they have more familiarity.

But that's not even the crucial part; this is the crucial part:…

Of course, some code downstream also seems to be ignoring 'isLoading' and 'isError' and that's also not helping. 🙃

I mean, sure, effect hooks are useful for things like data fetching and saving, but *definitely not* for handling state changes.

And even then, we're using TanStack Query in this project, so data fetching is already wrapped up neatly in state. There's just no excuse.

I will die on the 'React useEffect considered harmful' hill.

Bug report: "Multiple content flashes and layout shifts while opening an existing report"

Me: *immediately greps the React component for 'useEffect'*

Me: ...oh, boy, there's your problem.

you're already seeing & will see more stories about how various attempts at reducing energy use "aren't working," etc -- those are propaganda. this is fantastic

that's what i don't get about the llm bros

you don't buy bread at the store and say "it makes me feel like a baker."

it can't.

and how do you even know what a baker or tiktok creator feels like? you don't, bc you've never made anything.

the feeling they're feeling is pretend play

Reading tech dudes enthuse about Sora , “it let’s me feel like a TikTok creator”, just confirms to me that these shitbirds are simultaneously lazy as hell and have no taste.

(There’s literally zero barrier to entry for becoming a TikTok creator.)

For a second I was surprised it still was supported, then I remembered that both Internet Explorer and Netscape supported 16-bit x86 all the way into 2000.
