📝NEW paper out today🥳

❄️We look at extreme snow and rain (yes, rain!) in West Antarctica over the Thwaites and Pine Island ice shelves.

In it, we show that atmospheric rivers - long, thin "rivers in the sky" that bring tons of heat & moisture - deliver huge amounts of snow... and even rain 🌧️

Antarctica’s McMurdo Dry Valleys are one of the most extreme places on Earth 🌍❄️. I talked with @drgilbz.bsky.social about my PhD research on the glaciers there, why they matter for climate and ecosystems, and how they’re changing in a warming world. Check the great video she made below ⬇️
The weirdest place you've never heard of

But remember, the impacts of airport expansion don't stop at CO2: 2/3 of the climate effects of aircraft come from non-CO2 impacts. Remember that next time Rachel Reeves says they'll invest in "green" aircraft tech.

Expanding airports in a climate crisis is criminal.

Already not on track to meet our (too weak) climate targets, an extra runway at Heathrow will cause a vast increase in emissions, driving deaths and health issues for Londoners and the world.
What will expanding Heathrow do to UK’s net zero plans?
Government is counting on tech to provide a panacea, but there may be simpler ways to keep climate goals on track

I chatted to the amazing @drgilbz.bsky.social about our new paper (which Ella is also a co-author on!), which suggests that East Antarctica is becoming more prone to surface meltwater ponding. Check out the video below!

📊NEW ANALYSIS📊
Just 3% of the UK population take 30% of the fights. When this government expands UK airports, this 3% benefit the most.

We need a frequent flyer tax not a 3rd LHR runway.

2.8% of UK people are ultra-frequent flyers, 6+ flights/year,
7.7% are frequent 3+ , 17.1% regular 2+
& 72.4% fly once or never in a year.

Astonishing: 3% of UK people take 30% of all flights

According to a new report, these ultra-frequent-flyers, UFFs (>6 flights/yr) were responsible for 63% of new passenger traffic over the last 20 years.

New infrastructure is largely fulfilling the carbon burning habits of this tiny minority

It may be a small chance, but it's a chance nonetheless.

A year of average global temps above 2°C is now possible in the next 5 years, according a new report by the @wmo-global.bsky.social

Well, denier comments are ROLLING in. And they look suspiciously similar.

Fossil fuel money is backing bot-farms to sow doubt, delay and despair all over socials & platforms like YT.

Whether they're accusing me of lying cos "we're already at 2C" or cos "CO2 is plant food", results are the same.

🌊 Did you see the coverage last week of the paper led by Chris Stokes about long-term sea level rise from polar ice sheets?

It took me a while (cos, y'know, feelings), but here's my take on it: ▶️ youtu.be/sa9h_zVM1RY
