As the Tories advocate mass deportations, the end of human rights and giving up on net zero, the silence of David Cameron, George Osborne, Jeremy Hunt, Sajid Javid, James Cleverley, Tom Tugendhat and other supposed champions of the centre-right has been deafening and entirely revealing.

According to the Israeli far right the Board of Deputies is pro-Palestinian. Absolute lunatics

Many pundits today are pushing the line that everyone who protests the genocide in Gaza is basically either antisemitic or tolerant of antisemitism. But isn't that precisely the conflation of the actions of the Israeli gov't with all Jewish people, which is at the heart of this wave of antisemitism?

This is grim & dangerous over reach.

This is a government that have lost the moral argument & are still selling arms to Israel. Now further cracking down on dissent.

Absolutely the opposite of what they should be doing - so of course this is what the Labour Government choose.

NEW: Home Office announces planned new anti-protest powers, mainly aimed at pro-Gaza protests like those for Palestine Action. Police will be able to consider the "cumulative impact" of repeated protests and potentially order that they be relocated.

Like Charlie Kirk, Bari Weiss shows that the only talent that really matters is the ability to extract large amounts of cash from right-wing billionaires and turn it into power. If you can master that one weird trick, the sky’s the limit

Respect to the Barbican library for this display. Note 'The Hate U Give' - banned from a school after Tory councillor complained. Pathetic response.

Really not looking forward to all of the worst possible actors using yesterday’s horrific events to their own agenda. We can’t afford a vacuum for them to fill, or allow our pain to be used for hate.

I can’t describe twisted evil of an attack on Yom Kippur. Your Jewish friends are not ok.

what's the stupidest/randomest Simpsons quote that lives in your head rent free? Mine is the urge to say "you said go to bread" every time I am about to head to bed.

yep: if you wanted to design a policy that would drown more children in the channel, ending family reunion as a pathway to asylum would certainly be high on your list
danielsohege.bsky.social
And, as an aside, for a government which bangs on about "smashing gangs", cutting one of the only routes available to people to seek asylum in the UK is a pretty surefire way to ensure that even more people, especially women and children, are forced into making channel crossings. 5/

Javier Milei had to beg a bail-out and already needs another. Argentina's economy is in a tailspin. Gov't bonds and peso in freefall. People starving, throwing rocks at him.

Farage last year: "He's amazing. It's Thatcherism on steroids. Cutting and slashing expenditure. That's leadership."

Hi @morganj0nes.bsky.social. G8 to connect. Can u pls send me your piece on LM/Spiked? Would love to read it. Cheers!

Cheers! There's definitely a book to be written about members of leftwing splinter groups becoming thought leaders of English nationalism.

Great couple of episodes. I'm writing a chapter on LM/Spiked's role in free speech culture wars and the contest you and David outline is very helpful.

So was *The Sun* ‘inciting violence’ against Nigel Farage in 2014 when its editorial described his racist comments on my show as ‘racism, pure and simple’? And would somebody who interviews these ghouls on a regular basis at least ask them this question!

It's a mark of the habituation of Trump's authoritarianism that a president can summon his generals, tell them they'll play a "major part" in a "war within", announce a force to "quell civil disturbances" & talk of using US cities "as training grounds for our military" - & it doesn't lead the news.
"San Francisco, Chicago, New York, Los Angeles, they're very unsafe places and we're going to straighten them out one by one.
And this is going to be a major part for some of the people in this room. That's a war too. It's a war from within. …
I want to salute every service member who has helped us carry out this critical mission. It's really a very important mission. And I told Pete, we should use some of these dangerous cities as training grounds for our military National Guard, but military, because we're going into Chicago very soon.
… Last month, I signed an executive order to provide training for a quick reaction force that can help quell civil disturbances.
This is going to be a big thing for the people in this room because it's the enemy from within and we have to handle it before it gets out of control.
It won't get out of control, once you're involved, at all. They all joke, they say, oh, this is not good. You saw it in Washington. We had gangs of Tren de Aragua, say 10, 12, 15 kids.
And these military guys walk up to them, and they treat them with disrespect, and they just got pounded. They just got pounded, the gang just pounded, then thrown into paddy wagons and taken back to their country."

The BBC’s complaints department seems to think it’s entirely ok to 100% elide “hate speech” with “free speech” (as Nick Robinson did)

and that incidents of *actual* attacks on free speech, are an entirely separate debate, presumably for some other broadcaster to talk about
Nick Robinson: How the simmering row over freedom of speech reached
boiling point Many people also asked why we did not mention in the article the arrests of people who expressed support for Palestine Action and the prosecutions of Just Stop Oil
protestors. Nick Robinson was looking specifically at how hate speech
laws are applied to posts on social media in the UK. Supporters of Palestine Action have been arrested under the Terrorism Act. Just Stop Oil protestors were prosecuted
for public order offences. We would say that these cases were beyond the scope of Nick Robinson's article, and that there are separate
debates to be had over how the terrorism and public order
laws should be applied.

So, it's...

...Freedom of speech for all except the Prime Minister.

...Freedom of speech has no consequences unless they are bad for me.

...Freedom of speech for me to stir up division and discord, but not for you to challenge and counter it.

Glad we've got that sorted out.
