My latest pre-print is out:

"Pareidolic Illusions of Meaning: ChatGPT, Pseudolaw and the Triumph of Form over Substance"

I really enjoyed this one, where I juxtapose LLMs & pseudolaw to argue both create illusions of meaning that trick users.

Honestly can't tell difference between a troll and a factual story any more.

I mean this is ... plausible?
drjoemcintyre.bsky.social
Hadn't come across this incident, thanks. This is vintage pseudolaw- attempts to 'arrest' judges not uncommon, but rarely to level of kidnap.

Been a very significant increase in threats to judges (eg 50% growth in last year)
drjoemcintyre.bsky.social
Lol. Yeah, you are right. The same fantastical "law will save us all"...
drjoemcintyre.bsky.social
Pseudolaw beliefs may be consistent with, and in some cases exacerbate, extremism. But more akin to a set of intellectual tools than may be used to support other conspiracy and anti-goverment beliefs

This is a hell of a read. AI psychosis is profoundly disturbing.

This is the biggest, toughest article I’ve done about so-called “AI psychosis.” It’s the story of a man who committed a horrific crime in his youth but served his time and against all odds found love and a new life—one that completely unraveled after he started talking to Google’s Gemini chatbot.
He Grew Obsessed With an AI Chatbot. Then He Vanished in the Ozarks
Jon Ganz committed a terrible crime in his youth, but he survived prison, fell in love, and started over. His new life unraveled in a way nobody could have predicted.

Wait. When did bluesky get a bookmark option?
drjoemcintyre.bsky.social
Lol. That's new to me. Wild.

Tbh, i doubt we academics in Oz are held in sufficient regard to ever interest a judge

Taking time off for school holidays. Got to September and realised tank was empty...

Oooh interesting. Will have to track down

Of course if one was travelling, Adelaide in January is far preferable. Sunshine, beaches, great wine, legal theorists...

I have a piece on "Ivory Washing" coming out shortly which looks at the misuse of academic expertise to provide unwarranted legitimacy to political views. This is one of my case studies

Just to take stock: the first claim was that there was an entire literature supporting the anti-birthright position. Then, *after* that claim, scholars emerged to post drafts on SSRN. And *now* the government points to a "growing body of modern scholarship" all drafted after the initial claim.

Researchers found more than 80 cases of generative AI use in Australian courts so far – mostly by people representing themselves. That comes with serious risks.
More people are using AI in court, not a lawyer. It could cost you money – and your case

What?! You're first! I thought you would be pleased?

We constitutional and administrative law scholars are new to being on this list, so thought winning was the idea?
drjoemcintyre.bsky.social
*raptured

The rapture took my autocorrect too

What hasn't it happened there yet? We captured nearly 3 hours ago. I am now enjoying the quiet roads

Do we all get a bit of a break post-rapture? Hopefully

Someone asked if I was ready for the fall, and it actually took me a moment to realize that they meant autumn, not the complete collapse of democracy.
drjoemcintyre.bsky.social
Unfortunately entirely compatible with conditions of revolution / civil war / authoritarianism preceding either of the above

This is absolutely genAI. The rhythm of the language, the form over content, the lack of specificity, the appeal to sweeping statements and 'rule of three.' Every bit here has the fingerprints of genAI.

This needed to be struck out. But it is chilling that the President felt this sufficient

But I think this was beyond just incompetence. Have a read here

Donald Trump sues the New York Times (and Susanne Craig, Russ Buettner, and Michael S. Schmidt) for defamation, and the complaint for some reason begins thus: storage.courtlistener.com/recap/gov.us...
NATURE OF THE ACTION
On November 5, 2024, President Trump won the 2024 Presidential
Election over Vice President Kamala Harris in historic fashion, emerging victorious
in both the Electoral College and the popular vote, and securing a resounding
mandate from the American people. President Trump trounced Harris with 312
electoral votes and a sweep of all seven "battleground" states. This victory was
remarkable for many historic reasons, including because President Trump had to overcome persistent election interference from the legacy media, led most notoriously by the New York Times.

I was initially bemused when Trumps lawyers were revealed to be three small time operators
