This is the second "think stop strategising" I've come across in as many weeks.

Higher Education investment flows towards data rich environments so to chase that investment data is pursued. We become data. How do we find the ideas that will change the world if we don't stop writing Q1s?

Thoughts?

Mary E. Brunkow, one of this year’s Nobel Prize winners in Medicine, has only 34 published papers and an H-index of 21.

She never appeared in Stanford’s ranking of the world’s top 2% of scientists.
She didn’t chase citations, metrics, or the spotlight.

Yet, she became part of a discovery that changed how humanity understands the immune system.

Today, while many are busy chasing numbers, titles, and rankings —
she reminds us what truly matters in science: the question.

🔹 She wasn’t running after the lists.
🔹 She was running after the truth.

Because in the end, it’s not about how many papers you publish…
It’s about how deeply your idea can reshape the world.

Focus on your idea, not your ranking.

We need to let the mud dry slowly so the oven doesn't crack. So today I pulled out as much from the inside as I could. This will allow the air inside. This weekend I'll light some small fires.

The chimney needs to be burnt out to draw the smoke. Cardboard is covering the vent at the back.

Deflated exercise ball that worked as a mould inside a mud oven. Sticks jammed against a brick in the middle are supporting the chimney while it's built into the oven

Beer bottle used to keep a vent in the back of the mud oven. The insulation layer isn't yet finished as can be seen by the multiple layers of mud seen at the back of the oven.

Beer bottle removed to show the vent in the oven that will draw oxygen in. The chimney will draw smoke and heat out. Hopefully the oven should this retain an even heat.

My kid is intent on making the back look like a bum 😅

It's not just that HaSS thinkers will challenge the status quo as to why Arts degrees get slashed.

Investment in higher education is flowing towards data-rich domains, while disciplines (like HaSS) that are less likely to produce viable, commercialisable data are cancelled.
