The 2024 Hajj heatwave hit 51.8 °C, killing 1,300+ people. New research shows such extremes are becoming the new normal with climate change—and could happen annually later this century. Adaptation is now lifesaving.

Trump + 11 months: Investments in US clean energy manufacturing were hit hard last month.

We are now tracking 69 projects, $70.5B in investment, and 66,758 jobs that have been delayed, shrunk, paused, or cancelled since Trump took office.

Trump is manipulating national security to stop energy projects he doesn’t like
On Monday, December 22, the Trump Administration announced it was pausing five major offshore wind energy projects, citing “national security risks.”

Do both.

And if solar parks are built near villages or towns, then offer the people who are potentially affected free electricity to offset their concerns.

Solar panels are not nuclear power stations. They can be removed with little environmental impact and can actually benefit biodiversity.
The solution is right above us. Solar panels on existing buildings, car parks, and along highways generate clean power without sacrificing farmland or wild spaces. Let's use our built world first. #Renewables #Innovation

Overall my predictions for 2026 are similar to recent estimates from the UK Met Office and James Hansen. But my 2027 estimate is a bit below Hansen's, even if the error bars are inclusive of it:

Conditional on a moderately strong El Nino, I estimate that 2027 will likely be around 1.6C above preindustrial levels, though the uncertainties are huge and range from as low as 1.3C (with no El Nino) to as high as 1.8C (with an exceptionally strong one).

It appears increasingly likely that an El Nino event will develop in the latter half of 2026, which will contribute to higher global temperatures in 2027 (on top of long-term warming). However, it still remains highly uncertain how it will develop.

2026 is very unlikely to beat 2024 as the warmest year on record (only a ~5% chance) given current mild La Nina conditions in the tropical Pacific and ENSO neutral conditions expected for the first half of the year.

Climate "overshoot" represents a major crisis in politics and governance.

There is no plan at present for tipping points.

There is no discussion about climate stability writ large

Overshoot will require a level of crisis planning and discussion that we are largely unwilling to have at present.

So that means AI is basically responsible for about 0.05-0.13% of global emissions.

That’s right. At most it’s around a tenth of a percent.

That sounds big, right?

But how much is this, really?

Currently, total global GHG emissions are roughly 60 *billion* tons of CO2eq (including all greenhouse gases, from all sources) annually.

This paper might be the most detailed estimate of the emissions associated with AI.

It suggests that AI could emit as much as 30-80 *million* tons of CO2 per year.
