Kemi Badenoch has said that the UK will leave the ECHR if the Tories win the next election

But is it possible to leave these conventions? If so, how? And, less radically, can these conventions be reformed?

@cbarnard.bsky.social has the answers 👇

Fantastic to work with @anandmenon.bsky.social and others on this report out this morning. Big takeaway from our panel - is the government prepared to take on fights this Autumn to make progress on these challenges. Nothing left to lose, or the window of opportunity to be bold already passed?

What are the key policy challenges the UK must confront?

As we publish the Policy Landscape 2025 report with @ukandeu.bsky.social, @ruthcurtice.bsky.social and @anandmenon.bsky.social reflect on the challenges facing the government one year in.

Read it here:

 Quote from Ruth Curtice and Anand Menon: The most consequential choice facing the government after a tough first year is whether to be more radical in their pursuit of growth. We’ve accumulated a series of wicked problems that can only be effectively addressed over a number of years. Yet at the same time, politics demands quick results, not least given the state of the polls.

Trade alert - @aslak.bsky.social has done an excellent job at highlighting key aspects of the US-EU deal so I/others don’t have to (especially when on holiday ☀️).

The EU-US trade deal is here - it's probably not the end of uncertainty as the details are ironed out, but it's a momentous deal. In sum, it's a political defeat for the EU, but in economic terms I see it as, under the circumstances, a win of sorts. 🧵

After a brief, funding uncertainty-induced hiatus, the latest divergence tracker is out.

Hopefully it has been worth the wait, as it finds evidence that the UK’s realignment towards the EU is going further than many assume.

"Alignment by stealth", if you will. Here are the key points...

🚨The latest edition of our UK-EU Divergence Tracker is now live🚨

While much attention has been paid to commitments made at the UK-EU summit, @jreland.bsky.social finds that there is already more alignment going on than is generally recognised 🔎
