I'm skeptical about the allegations in the complaint. And I suspect most of the backlog are applications from out of state who do not have any pressing need for the permit.

I'm now following this litigation #2A #GVP
TL;DR - California had to scramble to pass new concealed carry permit laws after the 2022 SCOTUS decision in Bruen. It's taken a long time to develop procedures and hire staff to process the tens of thousands of applications, so delays run 18 mos+

I think it's a close call. The same judge could give a speech about the need for legal reforms at a bar association event or a FedSoc event, and they could use clips from the speech in their film, yes?

I confess I kind of liked the part about Matt Gaetz feeling humiliation, though.

I *love* Tolstoy's nonfiction writings criticizing patriotism, wars, etc. One of my very favorite writers.

I was re-reading Tolstoy's Patriotism and Government (nonfiction political writings), and was surprised to see near the end that he thought we could have a fully-functional court system without a centralized government, any threat of the government using lethal force, or even a Westphalian state.

I agree with your overall point that we can't rely on the judiciary to save us from authoritarianism. (I lean toward the "Hollow Hope" theory of SCOTUS) I'm a Trump-era convert to the left, and I'm still confused about the left's lack of strategy compared to what I've seen for years on the right.

Looks like the media had a really good year around 2018 for some reason.
drustevenson.bsky.social
Do you think this is equally true across all levels of the judiciary? I am uncertain that most trial court judges (with a handful of bad-apple exceptions) are as anti-regulator as the highly politicized SCOTUS and the circuit court judges now auditioning for SCOTUS.
drustevenson.bsky.social
I thought that was an interesting question.

When a person who regularly destroys things says, "Now let's *do* that thing!"....they don't mean,"Let's undertake that activity in a constructive or productive way."

I know conservatives who think the only reason people dislike them is their conservative beliefs. Never occurred to them that they are also unlikeable even apart from that.
drustevenson.bsky.social
I'm not surprised that the conservative propaganda ecosystem provides financial incentives; I'm surprised that it appears to be a bottomless money pit that never runs dry. How long can you bilk the same people with the same scam?

For cert denials, I'm seeing Missouri v. United States (24-796), Smith v. United States (24-6936), Wheeler v. United States (24-6996), and Clark v. United States (24-7188). Did you notice any I'm missing? It's easy for me to overlook some of these that have common surnames vs the U.S.

I expected it to be much worse than his first term.
drustevenson.bsky.social
I think a lot of posts on Bluesky conflate fascism, totalitarianism, and authoritarianism, making no distinction at all between these terms, and diluting the value of any of these words in our discourse.

If we were living under fascism, none of you would be here daring to post things. You'd be erasing your social media accounts and keeping your head down; you'd know that peacocking your faux-bravery on a network would expose you to being disappeared.
You have no idea what "fascism" really means.
mouthfulofcavities.bsky.social
the regime is zip tying toddlers and ripping them away from their mothers unclothed... calling it fascism upsets this neo-con.

More seriously, it has helped in the last 3 years build connections with gun violence prevention groups, so now I serve on some advisory boards etc that I enjoy a lot.

I'd like to attract readers/viewers, but would define success (for me) as influencing courts or legislators, or equipping advocates to influence courts and legislatures.
