For folks curious re the news re gender affirming care for trans youth I wrote a quick summary in the BDNH newsletter

It’s NOT a national ban.

it creates no new civil or criminal penalties, it is a proposal to wield the power of the purse to discriminatorily deny care

Shifting resources from punishment to systems of care is both **extremely** popular among Democrats, Independents, and Republicans, and it's consistent with the overwhelming social scientific evidence. It's one of the clearest policy decisions around.

Really useful analysis of data to show how many people are going to ICE detention from local jails. These arrests are less visible to the public - as compared to raids or street arrests -- so we don't see the full scope.
From @prisonpolicy.org: New analysis of government data from ICE via the Deportation Data Project shows federal agents reliant on local jails and police to reach their arrest numbers.

Just heard disappointing news that @warren.senate.gov will co-sponsor the Kids Online Safety Act again despite overwhelming opposition from LGBTQ, human rights, abortion rights, and racial justice groups.

This is a horrific betrayal of her constituents, particularly trans youth and their families.

Because North Carolina prisons demand kickbacks and issue markups on commissary goods, people inside pay MORE than these items cost on the outside: "a 4.25oz bag of Chex Cheesy Pizza Snack Mix costs $8.75...even as Walmart sells an 11oz bag of the same product for less than $4."
NEW in Bolts: In North Carolina, an increased markup on canteen goods adds to the financial burden on incarcerated people and their families, highlighting how prison systems squeeze them for revenue.

As for me, I am not a pessimist of any kind. And these tech bros are not optimists. They are autocratic extractionists and I’m against that.
When I’m accused of “technopessimism“ I counter that I’m not “pessimistic about technology“; I am opposed to the economic, political, and social project of upward wealth transfer that “AI” is being leveraged to bring about. If that phrasing is useful to others, then go ahead and use it.

DHS/ICE, which just got the largest budget increase in its history, claims it doesn't have enough money for hard drives to preserve video evidence in a detainee abuse case at Broadview. Suggests to a judge that maybe the detainees could provide them

The government also said "we don't have resources" to retain all footage and that plaintiffs could supply "endless hard drives that we could save things to."

Establishment Democrats aren’t afraid of the GOP. They simply agree with the GOP in almost all the ways that count. And it is in those ways they do the most harm to the poor, to the sick, and to immigrants.

I am amazed by the people who don't think this is going to further radicalize the left. Talk about not reading the room at all.
The centrists in the Senate Democratic caucus saw that the country was rallying to the party in the 2025 elections and resolved that they would do anything they could to kill that momentum.

Shutting down the government is a big deal. People have been hurt in big ways as a result of the decision. To have that suffering be for nothing—to re-open the government without actually having protected people’s health insurance and economic well-being—is unconscionable.

Stewards of society should protect people at any cost, not run numbers on which of us are expendable. But even then, the numbers bear out that it is costing more just to play exactly that game. It costs more (it’s costing everything!) to play frivolously with our lives but they still do it.

I feel more like this with every passing year.

We need a party that is committed to preserving, protecting & improving life. We don’t need people intent on endlessly negotiating how much humanity we deserve or if we deserve any at all.

We don’t need a society built around manufactured scarcity.
This pretty much sums up the entire ideological dispute between the two American political parties.

What they are arguing about, on almost all issues, is either methodology or magnitude. That is literally it.

The party of We Will Kill You vs the party of We Will Let You Die.
To be clear, Lindsey Graham, an American senator, has gone on the most popular Sunday morning current events show in the country and suggested that we drop nuclear bombs on Palestinians.

While they may differ in methodology, both parties agree that Palestinians should be eliminated.

it’s a Milton Friedmanesque race to the bottom where any social benefit that could remotely be construed as an impediment to the market must go. they’re even saying rent controlled multifamily housing is “overrated,” I assume to normalize their demolition. Abbondanza!
Note too that the “bolder rezoning plan” SF YIMBY is demanding is not actually more density, but just less affordability and less funding for affordable housing and public services. It’s a pivot to austerity.

Don't see a way out of this apart from the strict legal regulation of all generative "AI". Everything needs to be labeled, the use of the likeness of real people (alive or dead) without their express consent needs to be libel (even in a labeled video), and the fines need to be ruinous.
Cuomo keeps embarrassing himself with AI slop ads.
