I think it's valid, but it depends on the purpose and the degree of cohesion pursued. I've had many instances in which there was more of a pretense of a community, than a community itself. That the clash between those different groups and their localised understanding ends up bringing up issues.

more than five, six people or so? The time it takes contradicts the time people may have, it also takes away from the character into the spectacle of the roleplay at the moment and what happens...

It's why I don't want to do more than 8-12 people myself anymore, I don't think it's good roleplay.

I think that for these massive approaches to be more viable, you would need to make a lot of it automatic or easier to grasp, like having a clear culture IC wise of what does what, what effects magics or technology can have, and so on.

But even in TTRPGs you notice that it's difficult to do it for

And, applied to a general setting or a specific place? It can just dillute everything. The limits of a setting, the symbols of the characters and what they can do comparatively with others, the power scaling...

More bad faith, more people letting things slide, more clashing than collaboration. It all becomes a pretense of something community, instead being a big spectacle of, at best, smaller groups that interact with themselves, and not character to character-and-DM in a more expansive setting.

We've all not come together to decide on what flies or not, many people are acting here with different ideas and interpretations of what goes and what not, and the more the people, the more the dispersion, wonkiness, things that cannot be quite addressed or approached.

Yes, there are situations in which you get a person who can handle 15, but I will start casting doubt on the capabilities to actually acknowlege all those characters and their impacts unless they've been quite stable in time.

But for the pretenses of communities and campaigns I've seen?

I did enjoy events like these for what they were, I just tone down my expectations.

I don't think it's a good idea to have that amount of people because it becomes difficult to answer to things, to have meaningful impacts, to balance the experience. I think there's a sweet spot of up to 8-12 people

Before you rush to condemn Wikipedia here in the comments, PLEASE read the article. This headline maliciously misrepresents both the extent of the deal and the intent of automation on Wikipedia (they want to use it to find dead links and update options for searching, for example. Not write pages.)

I will be a bit more elaborate in a while because this requires me first to speak it out talking to myself and then write.
