Day 5 of #ArtAdventCalendar

A lucky face on shot of one of the beavers that live beside me

*In retrospect, a pro would have probably turned it to f10 or so to keep the nose in focus too🤷‍♂️

In the spirit of the deep freeze Ottawa is heading into...

This was last January

I loved how every evening for 15 or 20 minutes, the ice would take on whatever colour the sunset did #ArtAdventCalendar #Ottawa #Canada

That's nearly enough for some squeaky snow tmrw morning😅🇨🇦

Super early in the season to be dropping into the ACTUAL cold!

I've been jumping outside to fill the birdfeeders in a tee-shirt every morning up until now😅

Day 4

This was early spring when the leaves were beginning to return.

The previous year I removed a few trees that were crowding this Black Cherry tree

It was shot with the phone at 15mm, but in manual raw mode so I could balance the sky vs tree contrast in post #ArtAdventCalendar

They're kind of the oddballs of the dog world

They're not really pack social except during child rearing

And they have that high-twitch muscle makeup like cats! Red foxes have been clocked at 72km/h for short bursts! They catch snowshoe hares ffs! I've seen it! And they can jump like a mf #Mammals

I love the studying face of this forest raised Raccoon

"oh, weird... A human! I wonder what those things eat. It doesn't seem to be eating from my hazelnut plants below"

I don't think they're actually unhinging! I think there's jaw bones are just designed to be able to do that...

They're a canine that evolved for small game catching at speed, or by jump attack.... Im pretty sure the whole terrier dog family can open wide like that too (for the same reasons)

Big yawn after sleeping the day away in the wild Coreopsis meadow by the water

😅 I'm in a rural suburb of a suburb of Ottawa—just far enough out that there's more animals than people, but you can still buy good food

Totally agreed, though... The Muskokas are stunning! 6000 square foot cottages and all🇨🇦

😅 I added a few details

A Great Crested Flycatcher in the tops of the forest canopy on one of those hot humid mist rain weeks midsummer where eastern Ontario Canada nearly emulates tropical rainforest climate

Both of us freeze in place to listen to the giant ravens way above in the white pines—they're so cool and weird (the ravens)

"Guuurrrraawwwkkk"
"Tee-cue, tee-cue"
"Brreeeeeeppp"
*deep gurgle sound*

Looks colder than it is—Canadian sweater weather
-1°c

You get that double sun off the ice reflection... you could tan... or go blind😅

Too busy to care about me... He gave a quick glance when he swam within 10 feet, then continued on towards the sleeping lodge across the large pond👀 #Mammals #Ontario #Canada #Nature #SonyAlpha

My morning alarm clock was 4 Trumpeter Swans, 2 groups of 2, gliding around in the back pond randomly thunder honking at nothing👀

Can't really go outside, or I'll scare them

They make geese look tiny, eh😅

I only move the leaves off the driveway that'd get disturbed by cars anyway.... all the birds get their food from under the leaves, plus the bumblebees survive under there🥰

My early winter ❄️🌲🙂

**Every year, you have to relearn how to not overexpose the snow on sunny days😂

My Dad asked me to tell him specifically what I wanted for Christmas...

My choice 🧐😅 #BillsMafia

My woodland looks so different once the nearly leafless canopy finally opens up for winter...

The coolest part of this and the coming season is this is when the owls tend to visit and/or stay here

Seasons at the Beech 🌳👀
(Fagus grandifolia)

*7 months ago, I removed the competition around it horizontally, but I'm not sure I opened the top canopy up enough for a 2ft/year growth rate. Not sure it matters🤷‍♂️

I cut logs all day with a chainsaw

A buddy and I are trying to figure out how to winterise the campfire place called 'Woodhenge'😅

7 foot walls on all sides is the basic plan

My Bigtooth aspen nearly glows near sunset🌳🍁🍂

It grew in sand and full south facing sun for nearly 20 years now. It got giant but kept all its original lower branches intact

Because of my glacial sand based soil here, I get clonal colonies of Prunus pensylvanica! Another one of the native small cherries... tastes a lot like sour candy🤷‍♂️🍒🙂
