I've been told by neighbours that she's back! She spent the previous winter here, often around my house. The community is a collection of 3-5 acre lots, 60-90% of each kept as forest, so finding her on purpose with a camera is easier said than done👀🌲🦉

I walked around the lake and snapped a shot from far away this morning. My White pines look so healthy and full compared to that summer drought months ago🌲

Most of the snow melted in a day of rain yesterday, but we've dropped right back down to -10c now 🤷‍♂️

In the 1930s, the U.S. tried to bully the world. Here’s the story of how Canada resisted… by simply being boring. #cdnpoli #tariffs

Sugar Maple and American Beech forest glowing yellow orange in autumn

Occasionally these 2 will do this in the northeast if left alone long enough. They'll rise up 100+ft and form a climax mesic closed canopy forest where only THEY can thrive #ArtAdventCalendar #Canada #Trees

So, I started Bleak House by Charles Dickens last night...

Chapter 1—"In Chancery"
took 2 attempts and a handful of googles to complete with any understanding😅

Has anyone started this?

It's pretty new... It began airing in England + Ireland on December 14th. Filmed all over Ireland (Dublin, Causeway Coast, Wicklow etc)

Kind of a return to serious acting for Alicia Silverstone

The series was just added to CRAVE for streaming in Canada👀

A few captures of the mighty Bur Oak in early spring🌳

They're occasionally seen wild in forests, but more often in open meadows, farms, and parks

They're a little too big for modern suburbs, but you see them in older ones reaching 60ft in all directions over the entire property #ArtAdventCalendar

The revival of the Klamath River & its watershed over the past 14 months—after the completion of the biggest dam-removal project in US history—is one the most hopeful stories I know in our hope-stripped age.
Magnificent @bengoldfarb.bsky.social essay on it here.

I always think of that Norman Maclean quote when I look at this

"And there could be no better place to learn than the Montana of my youth. It was a world with dew still on it, more touched by wonder and possibility than any I have since known"

The woodland around my house isn't old enough yet to have those giant displays of Trilliums you see on hikes, but every year there's a good handful more! In addition to the normal rhizome root spread, this flower has seeds designed to attract ants, who move them to new ground #ArtAdventCalendar

An old pump organ in an abandoned home—it still worked! (imagine an accordion and pipe organ had a baby for sound)

The motion blurred photo was an accident, but I kind of like it... It feels like an artist interpretation on canvas #ArtAdventCalendar

I wonder when the last time the canal opened for skating before Christmas?!

It looks like we're trending that way!

It'd be cool to go skating and see all the Christmas lights downtown

The Grackles migrate north for the spring and retire the giant flock behaviour they're known for in the south. They intelligently adapt to wetland/forest life by foraging under leaves on the forest floor, later raiding nests of other birds, then fishing like shorebirds by summer! #ArtAdventCalendar

A lot of 2025 circled around the theme of oak trees. I watched a red oak I transplanted from the forest to full sun in 2024, thrive its first year. I went on to plant over 50 more oaks from seed throughout the community. A mix of Quercus rubra, Quercus macrocarpa, & Quercus alba
