Mr. Weisman, who joined The Times in 2012, was under scrutiny for messages he posted on Twitter on July 31 and Aug. 7. In the July 31 posts, he implied that it was inaccurate to describe certain politicians from urban areas as being representative of the Midwest and the South. He specifically mentioned four Democrats: Representatives Rashida Tlaib of Michigan, Ilhan Omar of Minnesota, Lloyd Doggett of Texas and John Lewis of Georgia. Three of the four are minorities. “Saying @RashidaTlaib (D-Detroit) and @IlhanMN (D-Minneapolis) are from the Midwest is like saying @RepLloydDoggett (D-Austin) is from Texas or @repjohnlewis (D-Atlanta) is from the Deep South,” Mr. Weisman wrote. “C’mon.” Mr. Weisman, who is white, deleted the tweet and a pair of follow-ups after they were criticized as racist on Twitter and in the African-American-focused online publication The Root.

Despite the album’s aspirations towards the avant-garde, To Pimp A Butterfly isn’t even particularly innovative. The blending of jazz, funk, and neo-soul has been a cliché of progressive-leaning hip-hop since the late 1990s. Basically, anything the Soulquarian clique ever released. Common’s Electric Circus, Q-Tip’s Kamaal the Abstract, The Roots’ Phrenology all moved towards sonic eclecticism that Kendrick is dabbling in. Like Kendrick’s latest, the musicianship on each of its predecessors was virtuosic. However, each fell victim to the same plague of prizing atmosphere and abstraction over tight songwriting.

I don't understand this framing. According to the article, Black men have suffered a higher jump in unemployment (and have a higher overall rate of unemployment). Why are they cut out of the narrative?
Unemployment rates over the past year have remained largely steady for every group of workers but one: Black women, whose unemployment rates have been rising. Over the past several months, Black women’s unemployment rate has jumped from 5.1 percent in March to 6.1 percent in April, 6.2 percent in May and 5.8 percent in June. The unemployment rate among White women and Asian women stayed largely flat around 3 percent from March to June, and among Latinas, it hovered near 5 percent in that time period. The rate for every racial subgroup of men stayed flat during that time, except Black men, who last month saw a significant increase — 6.9 percent from 5.2 percent in May.

What this "self-admission" category means in practice, the lawsuit alleges, is that police trawling the social media accounts of Black and Latine teens find evidence of them displaying a color or a hand gesture that the NYPD has deemed gang-associated. What colors? According to the lawsuit, "NYPD training materials indicate that they include black, gold, yellow, red, purple, green, blue, white, brown, khaki, gray, and orange." Until 2023, people were also being added to the database if they met any two of a separate set of conditions, which included "frequent presence at a known criminal group location," "association with known criminal group members," "frequent wearing of the colors and frequent use of hand signs that are associated with particular criminal groups," and "other." What constitutes a "known criminal group location"? The NYPD doesn't offer any publicly available definition, but, according to the lawsuit, the NYPD "has designated NYCHA properties in their entirety as gang locations," and has added minors to the gang database because they "frequented" the public housing property…where they lived. Significantly, while the criteria for getting listed in the secret gang database are so elastic and vague that they could sweep up virtually anyone, the NYPD has been applying them a bit more specifically, against Black and Latine people. As of this year, according to the lawsuit, "of the roughly 13,200 people listed as 'active' members of a criminal group in the database as of 2025, 99 percent are Black and/or Hispanic." Another 14,100 people are listed as "inactive" gang members in the NYPD database, and of those, 97 percent of them are Black and Latine. Russian crews? Albanian networks? Chinese syndicates? Entirely absent from the database. What about a violent gang sharing symbols, colors, and a uniform, like the Proud Boys? Nah.

All citizens are not listened to equally, despite the importance of responsiveness and listening to different theories of democracy. We take an intersectional approach to make several novel predictions about how citizens' identities, the topic of constituent messages, and the identities of elected officials combine to influence responsiveness. These theories lead us to expect (and empirically confirm) that Black men in particular - more than other racial and gender groups - are systematically ignored by elected officials. We implement a wide-scale experiment with U.S. local elected officials (N=23,738) to test our predictions. Extending previous work, we vary the race, gender, and topic of the constituent's message, and we observe if elected officials both open and reply to constituents messages. We find that Black men are systematically ignored, regardless of the message they send. In contrast, elected officials respond less to Black women when they discuss race and less to White women when they discuss gender. We discuss the implications of this study for work on responsiveness in democratic government. I'm too ignorant to talk confidently about what led to the Oct. 7 attack, but this is something that I have wondered about.
Biden’s point person on the Middle East, Brett McGurk, was a holdover from Trump’s first term, and McGurk’s singular, fanatical goal under both presidents was to broker a major peace deal between Israel and Saudi Arabia, while treating the Palestinian issue as a minor nuisance. That set the tone for Biden’s whole Middle East approach, notoriously captured in a sentence national security advisor Jake Sullivan wrote for publication shortly before the October 7 attacks: “Although the Middle East remains beset with perennial challenges, the region is quieter than it has been for decades.” The attacks likely occurred when they did because Hamas recognized it needed to do something bold to derail McGurk’s dreamed-for Israeli-Saudi deal, and in that sense they were successful: such a deal may yet happen under Trump, but it didn’t for the remainder of Biden’s presidency. Biden, in short, is not only responsible for arming and funding Israel as it committed war crimes against Gaza, but for two and a half years of myopic policy that left Israel and the United States blindsided by Hamas in the first place.

At the core of this panic are concerns that China was able to get into backdoors set up by the U.S. government for domestic surveillance. Though not confirmed through reporting, some security analysts have publicly expressed a belief that Salt Typhoon penetrated systems authorized under the Foreign Intelligence Surveillance Act.
