every time i see an anuran up close it is the best thing that has ever happened to me in my life and i am not exaggerating or being hyperbolic at all or even a little bit
I feel so deeply hopeless every time I come on here + see the new attacks the government is launching against our beloved lands. Here are some beautiful lepidopterans I've had the opportunity to observe + identify this summer, for which I couldn't be more grateful. 🤍

Let’s help ‘em out folks.

These brave souls jump out of planes at 3,000 feet to fight fires deep in wild places.

They start out at GS-5 or GS-6.

Few civil servants do so much for so little pay.

Let’s lend our voices— help make sure they get fair pay.

Let’s go night shift 🦉🌲

A BAN... on smoke protections.... for FIREFIGHTERS........ glad things are turning around 😭
Under pressure, the USFS relents and makes masks available to wildland firefighters.

Firefighter safety is the #1 priority, and this must include caring for health and wellness.

Next step: long-term health care for available all firefighters, public and private.

Adding a quote to emphasize:

“This work was once done almost exclusively by government crews, but in the 1990s, after a series of staffing cutbacks, the U.S. Forest Service turned to logging and forestry companies for help.”

An impressive study by Donnellan et al. (2025) provides a near-comprehensive phylogenetic tree for a major clade of frogs that occur across Australia, New Guinea, and many islands in the adjacent Indo-Australian Archipelago. Read More about this #AWNews at AmphibiaWeb.org

Excellent way to weigh in on attacks on the roadless rule:

“Because of recent changes designed to stifle electronic comment submissions, SELC will be individually mailing the first 2,000 comments via USPS and will hand deliver all remaining comments.”

this is so disheartening. this nation has pioneered such critical scientific efforts over the past century- to throw it all away as a political move is (1) very telling and (2) very disheartening, especially for early career scientists such as myself.

In 2022, @roesslerdaniela.bsky.social et al. found jumping spiders exhibit REM-like eye movements, suggesting potential sleep-like states in these tiny arachnids. Highly recommend this excellent work as weekend reading!

To better acquaint myself with CT's target insects, I made these info sheets 💫 1/2
