I can have empathy for them. I also think they are a horrible person for what they’ve turned themselves into. And end of the day, they will deal with the finding out.

All while the people they got canceled, fired, murdered never get their justice.

It just makes me sad. And angry.

I hope that my ex-friend sees what they’ve become and change course. But I tell you, grievance culture is intoxicating, especially when you can make it lucrative.

Lucrative at the expense of the same downtrodden people you identify as.

And it’s hard to give up the grift.

And the thing is… it could have been me, too. I was bullied, slighted, made to feel lesser. I wanted revenge.

But I never took revenge, and I am not sure why I didn’t. Maybe my empathy won. Maybe I saw what grievances turned people into. Maybe I didn’t want it.

But I could have been them. Easily.

I had a parent like this. There was always an enemy, always someone that needed to be upbraided. Sometimes it was me. It was exhausting.

I guess that’s who they always were.

And my ex-friend, same. There was always a beef, always a slight. I wish I could say I don’t recognize them now, but I do.

The problem with grievance politics, and embracing grievance politics, is that there’s really no endgame. Everyone is a potential enemy, anything is a potential slight.

And it changes you.

You stop having empathy. You stop seeing people as complex and complicated, and instead it’s binaries.

I had a friend, whip-smart and driven, but also had a chip on their shoulder. And sadly, that chip meant that when confronted with a race issue, they red-pilled.

Now they’re an alt-right grifter, and it’s sad. They were good people, good to me, but they’re just profiting off hate now.

Hi, folks, a little personal news. In mid-November, I'm getting my aortic valve replaced via open-heart surgery. As scary as that sounds, my prognosis is excellent. This is fairly personal health news, and I'm posting publicly for two reasons.

Best of luck on your open heart surgery, and grrr the state of health insurance in America
