The promise of the Bootleg Series 18 has been years in the making:

"For decades we’ve been collecting tapes from the time before he began making official recordings ... We have some beautiful-sounding tapes that nobody has ever heard”

- Rolling Stone 2018
www.rollingstone.com/music/music-...
“We’ve wanted to do a Bootleg Series on Bob’s earliest performances for a long time,” says a source close to the Bob Dylan camp. “For decades we’ve been collecting tapes from the time before he began making official recordings. I think it would be really interesting to go through those. We’ll probably call it something like The Villager.”. Recordings from his era have been circulating within fan circles for decades, most notably a trio of tapes that Dylan’s girlfriend Bonnie Beecher and his friend Tony Glover created between May and December of 1961. The vast majority of songs in his set at the time were covers like “Baby Please Don’t Go,” “I Ain’t Go No Home” and “Man of Constant Sorrow.” “We have some beautiful-sounding tapes that nobody has ever heard,” says the source. “Or if they have, we have first generation tapes.”

Not working for me on Qobuz but I'm good :-)

Hard to see where those pre-releases can be heard. Not on YouTube or Spotify that I can see. Qobuz shows them but won't play (maybe they require their paid streaming service)

The book I'd be more interested in is a behind-the-scenes about how this one began and how it ended up this way. I can't help but think it wasn't originally intended to be like this.

I generally have an inherently positive attitude but I have to ask: is anyone genuinely excited for the upcoming bootleg series 18? If so, can you share why? It seems like they undershot this significantly, a big mostly rehashed missed opportunity. I hope I'm wrong.

The Bootleg Series Vol. 18 is coming on October 31st with home tapes, live recordings and outtakes from Bob Dylan's early career.

To get in the mood, I'm revisiting unofficial bootlegs from this period, starting with May 1961's Minnesota Party Tape.

On Amazon's Bootleg Series 18 listing page, they recommend a genuine bootleg to buy as well. Track listing of that kind of shows up the original version, to be honest...

On September 29, 2000, a fan frantically waves a copy of New Morning at the window of Bob's bus, stuck in traffic.

At the very next show, Bob debuts a New Morning song he's never played live before.

Coincidence?

Lesson: Someone wave Street Legal at Bob's bus this fall

Interesting (to me) would be to ask two questions of Dylan fans: which studio version of Tangled did you hear first, and which studio version to you like best? I'm willing to bet they are almost always one and the same.

While Bootleg Vol. 2’s alternate takes of songs from Bob Dylan’s mid-60s electric era were interesting, they lacked the mystique of the outtakes from Blood on the Tracks.

The collection’s unreleased New York versions from that album were a glimpse into a parallel universe. 🧵

This was the first version of Tangled Up In Blue I ever heard, and I still feel it's far superior to the final album recording.
