Historic moments for @i2sysbio.es. My lab supported by @conesalab.bsky.social run the first RNA-seq samples on our new PromethION sequencer @nanoporetech.com Let's see in few hours how does it go 🤞🙏 #rna-seq #nanopore 🧪🧬🖥

Yesterday, my book on biological agency, written with philosopher Álvaro Moreno, was published. Coincidentally, today an article appears in collaboration with my colleague @pablocarb.bsky.social @i2sysbio.es in which we explore a solution to a classic problem in the study of the origin of life.

It’s almost the end of our #mbiosys25 meeting, and what a privilege it has been to listen to the amazing talk by Michael Elowitz on synthetic biology. His work on dosage compensation gene circuits for tumor therapy delivery is truly mind-blowing!

Pleased to announce that our book on the evolution of biological agency is now available, thanks to @templetonfdn.bsky.social It condenses +2 years of discussions between a philosopher and a biochemist, including our conversations in the Jardí Botànic @uv.es

This is just the number of people who responded the survey, it doesn't reflect the volume of data they produce
dzunkovam.bsky.social
Well, according to the survey, 14% of the scientists do not care if somebody is using their sequences immediatelly. I personally like the idea of getting direct contact email on the data producers, because sometimes they are difficult to find through the associated publication (if any).

This is what this is about for me: protecting early career researchers who haven’t published their data yet from data thefts. In 2022 my lab’s data was used by two studies, scooping the work of grad students and postdocs. I contacted the authors, who had used our data. One team understood, retracted

The application of DRI can be lifechanging. An example is a PhD student who spent months extracting DNA from difficult-to-reach samples, and finally published their first paper deciphering the microbiome metabolism. In order to get this study published, they had to make the sequences public. But...🧵

Our paper proposes that if data are protected for few years by DRI, the data consumers should contact the data creators. Data creators might provide additional analyses to improve the follow-up collaborative paper. For the PhD student from the example above, DRI would open new carreer opportunities

... it's quite common that data consumers download public sequences, run some new bioinformatic tools and publish new exciting results. It's good for these data recyclers 🎖️, but quite sad 😭for the PhD student - the data creator, who doesn't get any recognition for their previous huge effort...🧵

The Data Reuse Information tag (DRI) will be associated with at least one ORCID account. This will indicate that the data creators prefer to be contacted before data reuse, and simultaneously provides data consumers with a mechanism to get in touch with the data creators. 🧵
