If a government isn't protecting the powerless from the powerful, then what's the point of a government?

The current state of the Democratic Party is failing miserably at the former, and our legal system has shown itself to lack the rigor, capacity, and integrity to ensure the latter.

The only coherent positions are (1) to reduce the size and power of these institutions--used by ruling class elites across the world to protect inequalities of many kinds--and (2) to enforce robust mechanisms for accountable vindication of basic human rights.

THREAD. ICE is in the news, and rightly so, but a lot of the commentary fails to see how the underlying surveillance tech, militarization, infrastructure, policies/practices/training, and corporate profiteers are shared by other domestic agencies and repressive bureaucracies in other countries.

I'm over here just still refusing to accept the new TikTok terms of service. Not sure why. Super don't trust it.

So put all your best content in the first .25 seconds so I still see it before the popup.

This is where your money for "more training" will go.
BIG news from @bloomberg.com, which confirms that ICE has gone ahead and *purchased* multiple commercial warehouses with the aim of converting them into mass detention camps.

This is likely to be the big detention story of 2026 — literal warehousing of people.

Plans for such centers and jails in nearly two dozen communities have sparked protests over suitability, proximity to homes and schools.

Why AM I paying for strangers to shoot strangers in other countries I'll never see? It's so wasteful. I should only have to pay for people in a US city to be shot.

Wait, did I do this wrong?

Anyway, the Hyde amendment is unconstitutional and its justification is nonsense.
Why am I paying my water bill for thousands of miles of pipes? I only need to pay for the one which goes to my house. There's so many other pipes I'm not using at all, it's so wasteful.
Why does this library have thousands of books in it? I only read 10 or so a year. There's whole sections I'm not interested in an at all, it's so wasteful.

Paper details how police pushed for body cams so that they could protect themselves and control narrative while policing and surveilling more aggressively.

Dems allied w cops to create narrative that this was somehow a corrective for state violence, now every time they kill they get more $$/power

This is the bullshit we talking about.

When people say they don't trust Dems, this is what we mean.

Giving them more is a trick to get you to stop paying attention. A trick to get you to think they're the good guys, while nothing changes and the violence budgets increase. Again.

When I talk about how the Internet used to be fun, this is what I'm talking about. A lot of it was just being young enough with few enough responsibilities to have time to care. Some of it was that it was an option, not an obligation. I've got friends from GameFAQs.

ICE does NOT need training. ICE does NOT need equipment, including body cams. ICE does NOT need higher standards. ICE needs to go.

When we said that Biden started this when he told everybody to STFU about “DefundThePolice” and gave $400M of COVID public health funds to the cops after riding the largest anti-police protest in HISTORY straight to the Oval, you fucking SHOESHINERS said we were helping Trump
Democrats officially going all in on the mealy mouthed “ICE needs training” narrative.

No. ABOLISH ICE.
WARNER: It used to take 5 to 6 months to get trained. They've now lowered the training period to 47 days. Why 47 days? Because Donald Trump's the 47th president. Tell me that's a rational approach

KERNEN: I'm not taking that bait

WARNER: Joe! You can't pick your facts

It's quite similar to the Democratic party and liberal punditry's approach to body cameras, which I wrote about at length last year: campuspress.yale.edu/yjll/volume-.... "Training" rhetoric is an even more stark example of effective counterinsurgency propaganda.

THREAD. Having just written a book about this and talked to a LOT of Democrats, I can assure you that neither Cory Booker nor the policing industry he’s advertising think that more money for ICE “training” and tech would address any problem that any person of good will has with what ICE is doing.
