The pressure to be someone's only genetic connection, to fill the empty spaces affects the descendants of adoptees, too. That's a lot to expect from a baby. Adoption affects more than the adopted person. It ripples like a typhoon through generations.

Adoptee and bio parents'rights are limited when it comes to information disclosure, but siblings, descendants of adoptees, and other relatives often have NO rights. Whatever we lack in vital records, medical information, and familial relationships, our extended families are missing too.

As an adoptee, my entire identity has been the private property of the adoption agency and the government from the time I was an infant. I cannot lose privacy that was never mine to begin with.

Funny story. Convinced a doctor to run "all the tests" because I'm adopted and don't know my family medical history. He drew a line straight down the clipboard to order ALL tests. Imagine my surprise when I, a cis female, received confirmation that I do not have prostate cancer 😳

I have an original/ first family and an adoptive family. I do not use the phrase "biological family" because it feels like a commodified genetic supply chain, rather than an ongoing human experience.

I don't go around telling people my adoptive parents' social security or credit card numbers. I understand how privacy works. So why would I treat my original family with any less care? Privacy is not the same as secrecy.
