i think amazon is fundamentally evil, but I don't see much point in acting like the very rare event of downtime means cloud services are less reliable than self hosting. self hosting is more error prone and less secure and the cost of maintenance is much higher than a subscription fee

one thing doing tech support taught me is that "user error" isn't real and is instead a way of blaming the user for your shitty design/functionality. but once upon a time that was merely nerd arrogance. these days it's not even engineer error, it's a malicious design choice to purchase of "extras"

1. I have invested time in learning how to use it and struggled to find use cases that don't produce more problems than they solve (i have a degree in software engineering and studied AI, was excited by it at the time and learned calculus to better understand backprop)
