Like you are totally right that bad actors exist — we are developing the tools necessary to chase them out of the public square. I think it’s generally more likely that we will see it going the other way: the ability to confidently determine authenticity will constrain legally-susceptible media

Yeah Musk will probably try! I can’t say with confidence what will happen then but a whole lot of lawyers will probably line up to rip bloody chunks out of them, and we need to twist legislators’ arms to give them a whole lot of ammo.

Sure, and (initially, until non-vendor signers come onboard) you’re handing money to Adobe for chain signing. But media was gonna anyway, and that’s the primary point of value for authenticity tracking.

why would one rely on “hard code” tags in an image format to say it is AI manipulated, rather than treat all media that doesn’t have a verifiable chain of custody as potentially suspicious?

…which is exactly what CAI is doing with C2PA.
