Comparing the different seasonality and trends in the magnitude of monthly temperature anomalies since 1940 for the Northern Hemisphere, Southern Hemisphere, Antarctic and Arctic. There are significant differences in the rate of long-term warming (blue to red lines).

Data: doi.org/10.24381/cds...
Line graph time series of monthly mean surface temperature anomalies for the Northern Hemisphere region only. Every month is shown from 1940 to July 2025. There is a long-term warming trend in all months of the year. Line graph time series of monthly mean surface temperature anomalies for the Southern Hemisphere region only. Every month is shown from 1940 to July 2025. There is a long-term warming trend in all months of the year. Line graph time series of monthly mean surface temperature anomalies for the Arctic region only. Every month is shown from 1940 to July 2025. There is a long-term warming trend in all months of the year and a strong seasonality in terms of the magnitude of the anomalies. Line graph time series of monthly mean surface temperature anomalies for the Antarctic region only. Every month is shown from 1940 to July 2025. There is a long-term warming trend in all months of the year, but less obvious than the other regions.

this iconic advertising copywriter named Kathy Hepinstall Parks died over the weekend and I wanted to share something from her website I thought Bluesky would like
Why should I write better when a machine can do it for me?
Because actually no one can do it for you, because your voice is unique among all the people on earth. Siri never petted a horse's neck. Alexa has never been ghosted by the captain of the football team. But you have lived, your heart is beating, you have suffered, and you have something important to say. It's a human's job, to use words, and whatever job you give to a machine, that part of your brain goes dark. Maybe it's worth it when it comes to remembering phone numbers and directions, but when that part of your brain that uses words goes dark, that's a vast area that's very close to your soul. Don't let some internet platform convince you that what you have to say and create isn't worthwhile. Words are the echo of your soul. Honing that echo matters.

This month, we have been lucky enough to observe the various stages of larval development of Freshwater Pearl Mussels, Margaritifera margaritifera
We are running a captive breeding program in collaboration with NPWS and Moorkens and associates
These are stage 4

Yesterday, @david-smyth-eco.bsky.social showed me around the @irishwoodlandtrust.bsky.social's new 80-acre reserve, including about 30 of Atlantic rainforest, Coill Sheanadh Gharráin near Spiddal, Galway.

No words could do justice to the magic of the place. I was awestruck.

Agree. In Feeagh we are seeing a faster rate of warming (0.3 degree C/decade) in the winter months than in the summer (0.2 degreeC/ decade). So winter cooling isn’t happening to the same degree.

With the turn in the weather, the marine heatwave seems to have peaked. These data are from the M3 data buoy off southwest Ireland. Source: eurosea.marine.ie/his

Surface water temperatures on Lough Feeagh (west coast of Ireland) have been pretty high this year! Daily temperatures in May above the 99th% on most days. 🥵🌡️💦

So exciting to see the first of our 2024/2025 cohort of Freshwater Pearl Mussels starting to drop off their salmon host. We are working with NPWS to breed this endangered species at the Marine Institute’s hatchery in Newport, Co. Mayo
