Introducing my new profile pic:

this is from 2021. we'll see if things change this year.

"the math adds up"

Semester starts on Monday. Looking forward to answering versions of this question over and over.
Many of you have become drama-addicted doomers, and you seem to think it's important for the rest of us to join you.

Yes, things are bad. But change is within our power. Grow up. Act like sober, responsible adults in a democracy instead of cynical, all-is-lost teenagers.

Now get off my lawn.

I asked a member of the Texas A&M faculty if he could pay a virtual visit to one of my classes in the coming semester. He replied, "Hi John, happy to talk to your class as long as you don't mention Plato."

Intercepted mail....
A former student sent this email to the provost and president and cc:ed one of our members:

If you're going to the AMS meeting in Houston in a few weeks, we're celebrating Texas A&M's Dept. of Atmospheric Sciences 60th anniversary. You should show up and say HOWDY!

During black summer, my daughters were too young to know what was happening. Now, amid another Australian heatwave, they deserve answers

They threaten to make the prof teach an 8 am class if he doesn't revise his class. That's cold blooded and dastardly.

And I can't imagine getting assigned a new class a few days before the semester starts. That would be a nightmare [unless he taught it before, in which case it wouldn't be so bad].

My god this is embarrassing. I don't think we should dump on the Univ. administration for this. The Board of Regents has put them in an impossible situation.

Nice article from @chelseaeharvey.bsky.social about how the scientific community is reacting to vandalism by the U.S. Gov't.

Scientists are racing to rescue hundreds of datasets, websites and federal reports that have been deleted by the administration.

Nominations for @agu.org AGU awards are now being accepted!

Please nominate a deserving colleague. Many qualified people do not win awards because no one nominates them. Also, for many AGU awards, you can self-nominate.

Billionaires frequently seem to be sociopaths

it makes sense if 1) you're a fossil-fuel billionaire or 2) you want fossil-fuel billionaires to give you $$$

Update: this is now what comes up at the Climate Working Group domain. Their web skills are every bit as good as their science.
I'm starting to get the emails. Reporters: please see my comments below.
It's the most magical time of the year — when estimates of last year's global average temperature anomaly come out. Time to dust off my "last year was hot" auto-response.

I'm sure this post about whether we need to leave fossil fuels in the ground from @hausfath.bsky.social will not ruffle any feathers!

I joke, of course. RIP his mentions.

Definitely worth a read!
In the era of affordability politics, making clean energy cheaper may be a more viable emissions mitigation strategy than making dirty energy more expensive. My latest over at The Climate Brink digs into the debate:

I mute quite a bit. Mainly people that I like/respect, so I don't want to unfollow them, but just can't stomach what they post. There's no single thing that sets me off ... it's different reasons for different people.

Can 2nd Apple in China. Truly changed how I think about both of them.
