First steel, now pharmaceuticals. Looks like Starmer's quickie surrender deal with the USA was built on quicksand. Not even worth the paper it was printed on.

When you're not in anyone's tent any more, you become the lions' chew toy.

We would have no worries as EU members.

Starmer and Labour need to stampede in the opposite direction to Reform and the Tories, otherwise it will get very crowded on the right and further right.

If you can't see how this will end, then you're not paying attention (not least to what's going on on the other side of the Atlantic).

Ah, I never knew that. Thanks. In a sense, that makes the story even more fun. Imagine coming back to that news!

Something refreshingly pleasing about this story.

Imagine knowing you're nominated, but going hiking anyway.

Absolutely — focusing on real issues like healthcare, wages, and public services resonates more widely than chasing the same anti-immigrant rhetoric as Reform. Labour’s best path is to reclaim the centre-ground with practical solutions rather than getting dragged into culture war distractions.

Neither of those choices are better leaders.

Least-worst scenario (there is no "best", only more grim or less grim ones).

Both Labour and the Tories do very badly in next year's local elections.

Both parties boot out their leaders in favour of more electable people.

Consequence: support for both goes up, draining support away from Reform.

Only Shabana Mahmood could make me nostalgic for the days of Yvette Cooper. Quite a feat!

This is like Saruman boasting about the rising power of Isengard to Sauron squatting in Barad-Dur.

Badenoch's intro video is scenes from the Robinson march interspersed with footage of migrant boats.

Different flag, same script.
Just fewer bald eagles and more polite apologies

Labour have decided there's still a teeny tiny risk of getting too many votes. To be absolutely safe, they're setting fire to another big batch.

I only ever ordered deliveries from there so I am not aware of the incidents you're talking about, but strictly from a loss-of-tasty-food perspective, it's a sad closure.

Which is why I left them. No more. The biggest possible disappointment in government that could be imagined.

So Labour want to:
- Reform the ECHR (for the worse)
- Make life much much tougher for Indefinite Leave to Remain visa holders and applicants
- Bring in draconian extra powers to police protest
- Widen facial recognition
- Bring in compulsory national ID
- Deport more people

Not very Labourish.

The closer than the Tories get to Reform, the more it makes sense for Labour to leave them to it and head back towards the centre. Stop bashing immigrants 24/7 and concentrate on the important stuff.

Yes. Takes 30s to correct.

I can't help thinking that less than £50 total investment could make a lot of properties look much more presentable.

Why is it so many photos on property websites include shots of bathrooms and toilets where the toilet paper is down to the last few sheets?

Surely it's the easiest and cheapest tweak in the world to go round and make sure every holder is properly populated? Just like putting fresh flowers in vases.

Situation's grim, but this did make me laugh.

I'm expecting Labour to follow suit with a new task force called NICE. They'll still be vile and cruel to immigrants, but they will have a smile on their face and always say please and thank you.

Unless Labour copy them like they're copying Reform.

Will Labour fire back with a mini-me version of this Tory cruelty?

Or will they, far too late, decide to leave clear blue water between the parties vying to out-Right each other?

It's the same sort of "speak first, think later or not at all" bluffing attitude that had her on a sticky wicket about Stanford University. (Something that has already fallen out of the news without ever getting properly cleared up.)

Important. Accuracy is key in these fraught times.
edwinhayward.com
So's Labour's.

Both seem designed to normalise Reform thinking and usher them in come 2029.

(I don't subscribe to the conspiracy theories. This can all be explained away by hubris, stubbornness and ineptitude.)
