As @dartmouthartsci.bsky.social alum, very glad to see this. Many of the things this compact seeks to change would have lessened my college experience. Important moment for higher Ed.

It appears that my employer, Dartmouth, one of the Trump 9, has said no to the compact. All the better given that our president is cited within it. But she’s saying no. Count the small victories when they come.
Office of the President
Dear Dartmouth community,

As many of you know, Dartmouth was one of nine universities asked by the White House to give feedback by Oct. 20 on a draft of its “Compact for Academic Excellence in Higher Education.”

I am deeply committed to Dartmouth’s academic mission and values and will always defend our fierce independence.

You have often heard me say that higher education is not perfect and that we can do better. At the same time, we will never compromise our academic freedom and our ability to govern ourselves.

Best,
Sian Leah Beilock
President

Congrats to @lexapot.bsky.social & the incredible providers she works with to stabilize ECE providers and to work towards funding full cost of care for CA’s youngest. This will support kids, families and providers.

Victory! Child Care Providers ratified our third contract with the state after months of negotiations, rallies, and vigils. This comes after both #CALeg and Governor Newsom have ratified this agreement!

So disappointed by this decision to wind down our local NPR station due to fed & univ cuts. I joined several NPR programs over my years here to talk about my research.

I’m also frustrated for our community & as a parent who has a kid who adores listening to/ learning from NPR when he’s in the car.

WPSU in Pennsylvania becomes the first public media outlet to shut down as a result of the rescission of federal funding.

WPSU TV and radio serves one of the largest geographic coverage areas in the nation, stretching across 24 counties of central Pennsylvania.
Penn State to shutter WPSU, board declines transfer to WHYY
In voting down a proposal to transfer the station to WHYY, trustees expressed concern over a $17 million subsidy and wanted a commitment to hire staff.

I have two disappointed kids by this @nytimes decision. They were always very faithful adherents to the tagline not to let adults read the NYT kids section. It helped make my son a devoted newspaper reader.

Frey: I think the impetus has to be on all of us to recognize that we've got more guns in this country than we have people, and it's on all of us to recognize the truth and the reality that we can't just say that this shouldn't happen again, and then allow it to happen again and again

In a study of professors, women got 378 new work requests over 4 weeks vs 118 for men. Women spent more time on service, advising & teaching; men on research. Orgs should track who is taking extra duties & ensure they are rewarded and distributed fairly. www.forbes.com/sites/kimels...

In her dissent from today's decision—Mahmoud v. Taylor—Justice Sotomayor says that the court's holding "threatens the very essence of public education," and that its "reverberations" will be felt "for generations." This is a very heartfelt and mournful dissent. www.supremecourt.gov/opinions/24p...
Today’s ruling threatens the very essence of public education. The Court, in effect, constitutionalizes a parental
veto power over curricular choices long left to the democratic process and local administrators. That decision guts
our free exercise precedent and strikes at the core premise
of public schools: that children may come together to learn
not the teachings of a particular faith, but a range of concepts and views that reflect our entire society. Exposure to
new ideas has always been a vital part of that project, until
now.
The reverberations of the Court’s error will be felt, I fear,
for generations. Unable to condone that grave misjudgment, I dissent.
