Exciting news for #drosophila #connectomics and #neuroscience enthusiasts: the Drosophila male central nervous system connectome is now live for exploration. Find out more at the landing page hosted by our Janelia FlyEM collaborators www.janelia.org/project-team....
Male CNS Connectome
A team of researchers has unveiled the complete connectome of a male fruit fly central nervous system —a seamless map of all the neurons in the brain and nerve cord of a single male fruit fly and the ...

🪰 More than 750 scientists from 40+ countries gathered in Alicante for the XXVIII European Drosophila Research Conference #EDRC2025.
For 4 days, the fruit fly took center stage as a model to study health, aging, and disease👏

2nd paper outta my PhD is NOW PUBLISHED😭

🧬🖥️ 🦑Here we show how comparative #genomics 🧬 is a powerful tool to detect putative #SexDetermination genes: Dmrt1L & SoxH from #bivalves 🦪 share evolutionary patterns with Sry from #mammals 🐗 but not with genes from
#drosophila 🪰

Graphical summary of the paper, showin several plots from the manuscript, including a phylogenetic tree of bivalves.

Studies of prohormone convertase knockouts in mouse islets reveal plasticity in proglucagon processing to support intra-islet α cell-to-β cell communication, normally dominated by glucagon secretion www.science.org/doi/10.1126/...
α cells use both PC1/3 and PC2 to process proglucagon peptides and control insulin secretion
α cells can generate and secrete both glucagon and GLP-1 with distinct processing enzymes to control metabolism.

Feeling fortunate to have contributed data to this effort led by Dr Soumitra Pal, Dr Teresa Przytycka, Dr Brian Oliver, along with Dr George Vogler and Dr Frank Schnorrer. Puja in the lab also produced data on fat body cell counts.

Very proud of Celena Cherian in the lab, who contributed data to www.biorxiv.org/content/10.1... Briefly, Celena showed female fat body cells have higher ribosomal protein expression and more protein synthesis than males. This difference persists even after cell size is accounted for!
Cell type specific allometry controls sex-differences in Drosophila body size
Species and sex-specific differences in organ size are fundamental features of animal biology, yet the mechanisms that drive these differences remain debated. Adult female Drosophila are larger than m...

There are lots of interesting questions left from this work, but we were excited to report such a strong sex difference in these cells.
ejrideout.bsky.social
Puja’s data suggests that Tachykinin and Allatostatin C act on neurons to mediate this effect on fat storage. However, the subset of neurons upon which they act is unclear (but was not the insulin- or Akh-producing cells).
ejrideout.bsky.social
Because these hormones affect behavior and physiology, Puja tested whether this female biss in hormone production affected fat storage. She found Tachykinin and Allatostatin C contribute to greater fat storage in female flies with no effect in males.
ejrideout.bsky.social
Briefly, Puja saw a strong female bias in mRNA levels of hormones produced by gut enteroendocrine cells. This sex bias was not caused by sex determination gene transformer.
ejrideout.bsky.social
I have gotten a bit behind at sharing the lab’s latest work - this paper is now published - check it out! www.cell.com/cell-reports... Long story short: insulin is the major determinant of female fat storage, with a relatively minor effect on males.
