I used to teach intro to programming classes at what's now the Centre for Open Learning in Edinburgh (col.ed.ac.uk). Some of the younger students used the classes to improve their job prospects, but many of the older ones were doing them purely for interest. They told me about u3a.

If anyone ever wonders "why isn't this English word written in this obviously better way?", most often my answer is "it used to be, and could be again".

Postscript: to anyone reading this who hasn't done so recently, please check your expression of wishes form is (a) completed and (b) up-to-date. It can save so much heartache, particularly if your circumstances are the least bit non-standard.

It was really fun to write about this especially because, a couple of years ago, I put together a story about researchers finding old weather records in school logbooks from the Scottish islands.

Where else might climate and weather data be hiding??

‘Storm worse than ever today’: how schoolteachers tracked weather in the Outer Hebrides
School logbooks from the nineteenth century reveal how islanders coped with a period of particularly stormy weather. In their resilience is a lesson for the future.
