🙋Did you know that Edinburgh's "official" Hogmanay festivities are an ancient tradition dating back to the last century? 🎆
1993 to be precise.
The event was dreamed up by Edinburgh Marketing and Unique Events Ltd. to "[package] Edinburgh more effectively" and thus "improve the visitor experience" 🧵👇

This is true and I was the only one on set excited about it (and playing the song on my phone to blank stares)
Just watched the new Knives Out and I think it's really important you know that the scene in the Seminary's Gym is filmed in the same place Rick Astley filmed the music video for Never Gonna Give You Up.

I saw the window tracery and immediately made my friends pause the film so I could tell them.

I'll be helping with this fun day early in the new year. There are still some places available, so if you have children in P4-P7 who are off school for the in-service day on Monday 5 January, take a look!

The problem is that British people think American English is a corruption of British English (it's not) and American people think British English is a deliberate affectation intended to signal cultural superiority (it's not).
Someone in America on Substack Notes saw this and corrected my spelling of mum to "mom" and although I think - despite everything we find out, every day - there remain innumerable fantastic things about America, that probably tells you quite a bit about America, and none of it is very good.
First time my mum went to my dad's parents house she noticed my granddad had a party hat on. Seemed odd as there was no party.
"Why is he wearing that?" she asked my dad later.
"It's because he's so forgetful," said my dad. "My mum makes him wear it every time he's switched the immersion heater on."

It was really fun to write about this especially because, a couple of years ago, I put together a story about researchers finding old weather records in school logbooks from the Scottish islands.

Where else might climate and weather data be hiding??

‘Storm worse than ever today’: how schoolteachers tracked weather in the Outer Hebrides
School logbooks from the nineteenth century reveal how islanders coped with a period of particularly stormy weather. In their resilience is a lesson for the future.

NEW: Organ tuners have been leaving temperature and humidity records in little-known books for decades. 🎹

They reveal how temperatures inside churches have changed over time due to climate change and increased heating.

A new scoop for The Reengineer!

Church organ tuning records mirror our warming climate
The records appear to reflect climate change, as well as the increased heating of churches in winter
