May the God of justice send his Spirit anew among us, that we might care for the hungry, the homeless and all in need; and strengthen us in doing good and seeking justice that our lights shine in the darkness of the world. #LectionaryPrayers for the Fifth Sunday after Epiphany Year A February 8 2026
Opening Prayers for the Fifth Sunday after Epiphany Year A (February 8 2026)

Keir Starmer "is leaning into full transparency," according to Wes Streeting. I'm not sure I understand words anymore. Or is that just nonsense?

If there are any universities in EU countries that aren't currently destroying their HE sectors & aren't at immanent risk of fascist take-over, please rescue me! Will philosophise for cash.
Four weeks into my research leave I've finally managed a little research. I haven't finished marking, but I have breathing space to permit myself a couple of hours of thinking. The reason I haven't been able to research: under-staffing thanks to govt. underfunding of UK HE. Pretty sick of this.

I'd bet the same calculation holds true for the UK immigrant population. Any party proposing immigration crackdowns should be forced to explain how they're going to deal with the resultant drop in GDP. (As well as being called out as racist, obvs.)
The US immigrant population generated more in taxes than they received in benefits from all levels of government every year from 1994 to 2023.

The Cato study provides the first-ever 30-year analysis of the fiscal effects of immigration on government budgets.

A few days ago, someone here pointed out that the New York Times was making more of its sports journalism. You would think that they would want to expand sports coverage when the US is hosting the World Cup
