“For years I’ve told myself I wouldn’t let another person be my reason for existence. There had to be something intrinsic. But dogma wasn’t that, either.”

Citrine lies back on the bed, her hair splayed out around her head like a halo, like some ancient relic of a manuscript adorned with gold. “I don’t know that we’ll live to be old enough for these to be our mid-life crises, necessarily, but there’s no time like the present to abandon whatever a holy father—or unholy father—dictated that you do with your life.”

Pellegri pauses. “Could you please repeat that?”

“You should do what *you* want with your life.”

It doesn’t have the same sound to it, this time, and like so much else, she lets it go like sand or water flowing through her fingers into nothingness, into vastness, back to a beach or an ocean.

“How many crises am I permitted to have?” Pellegri slips off her heels and pulls her feet up onto the bed, flexing her toes against the edge of the platform through her stockings. She glances over her shoulder. “What if I don’t know what I want, after all of that?”

Citrine shrugs, still lying down, staring up at the staggered rows of light fixtures on the ceiling. “I could lick your tits about it.”
