Hi all,
I am back again on blue sky after some time of dwindling Twitter engagement.

My group studies #microbiomes of wild animals, we have exciting projects in mammals, birds, reptiles, amphibians.

We are based at Uppsala University, Sweden. @animecol-uu.bsky.social

Last week, we at @animecol-uu.bsky.social had the pleasure to host Chima Nwaogu från the University of Cape Town.

Chima gave the #Hemborg lecture, titled 'Why do Afrotropical birds breed when they do?' 🐦🪺

New manuscript out today in @ecol-evol.bsky.social, led by my grad student Anais. We collated data from thousands of recent animal pop-gen studies to test 3 simple hypotheses: does genomic (1) diversity decrease (yes), (2) differentiation increase (yes), both with increased IUCN-endangerment?

Bioinformaticians / computational biologists take note - know where you should take your OS tool chain from and do not introduce backdoors.

Heads up: ignore samtools dot org, similarly minimap2 dot com and likely others. It's owned by a known phishing site and while the binaries they offer look valid currently (but note they may be serving us different binaries to others), that could change.

Ie: it's not us (Samtools team)! Be warned

Today in the AI hellscape we are building for ourselves, people are easily creating "official looking" websites of popular bioinformatics software that are not at all linked to the developers.

Thanks for sharing your experience, Laura! We've done (with collaborators) individual mosquito transcriptomes, that worked well, and 16S on individuals, with only some giving enough reads, similar to your experience. So might be difficult, not sure!

Thanks! Going to tag @hassansalem.bsky.social here as well. Although I'm not thinking of beetles, more mosquito-like, maybe he has some thoughts?

Anyone with experience doing #metagenomics #microbiome of small insects, e.g. mosquitoes? 🦟🦠

Trying to figure out feasibility of doing individual metagenomes vs pools of individuals. I see both approaches are still used in the literature. My concern would be getting enough DNA from individuals.

Thanks for sharing! Would have liked to see your talk! The microbial #pangenomes session was my favorite besides the #microbiome one.

Thanks #ESEB2025 for a great conference!

Our group had a lot of fun meeting people, learning new things, and talking about our research!

Great to see Tom Gilbert still holding the #microbiome flag high, focusing mostly on why we need to study wildlife microbiomes more, even in the #museomics session. 🦠

I've had a wonderful 1st day at @eseb2025.bsky.social Here are the sketches from some of the talks I attended today. My highlights include Tristan on the adaptive genomics of colour spots on owls, Vicky on pearl mussel's response to climate change & Rebekah on firefly TEs & TE-induced mutations

I'm not very good at live posting (I tend to overthink my posts and then lose track of the talks). For #ESEB2025 live posts, I recommend following @marcrr.ecoevo.social.ap.brid.gy and @mrtnj.bsky.social, who have been good at it at every conference I've attended with them
