Our paper on the genetics of guppy color patterns has now been assigned an issue in NEE: doi.org/10.1038/s415...

With this paper, we also publish all 14,100 guppy photos used in the study, including before and after alignment and ornament extraction:

📢 NEW GENOME ALERT

In #G3journal, @squarehare.bsky.social, @judithmank.bsky.social, and team generated a genome assembly of the Amazon guppy, Poecilia bifurca and showed how this species shares sex chromosomes with related species, albeit with substantial Y chromosome degeneration. buff.ly/lM7etkw

I have gotten a bit behind at sharing the lab’s latest work - this paper is now published - check it out! www.cell.com/cell-reports... Long story short: insulin is the major determinant of female fat storage, with a relatively minor effect on males.

Massive investment in science in the upcoming Canadian budget would send a strong message that rationality and reason should lead the world, not charlatanism. People will return to science-based policies and health measures, and countries that have not given up will have a strong economic lead!

“Antiscience has gone beyond U.S. borders to Europe, Australia, and Africa. Defeating it will require unprecedented commitment and international cooperation, not only between scientific organizations, but also their host governments.”

Congrats to Dr. Meng Yuan, who defended her PhD on the genome-wide potential for ploidy & sexual conflict in plants! Many thanks to @judithmank.bsky.social for serving as her external examiner. A fun collaboration w/ @stepheniwright.bsky.social and also @stuartmcdaniel.bsky.social for a paper!

I could not agree more. As Mike Ritchie said in his #ESEB presidential address: learned societies have never been more important than now! @eseb.bsky.social
maxreuter.bsky.social
In relation to positive futures, I would add:
✅ Join learned societies
✅ Publish in their journals

#SocietyJournals #SciPub

Six actions for ecologists in times of planetary crisis: www.nature.com/articles/s41...

✅Explicitly recognize and address the #biodiversity crisis
✅Explore positive futures
✅Defend academic freedom
✅Go political
✅Inspire society
✅Address the colonial legacy of ecology
