Born in Boston, raised on the Gulf Coast. Californian by choice for more decades than my students have been alive. Dyke nerd. (Almost) terminal English major (academe joke). Proud union member/ white co-conspirator. Star Wars fan as of 77, now w/Magic Key
Just canceled my Washington Post subscription as a direct result of their “editorial board’s” decision to carry water for this White House’s immoral and illegal decision.

It’s a good thing my mother didn’t live to see this day. She was a huge fan of the Post’s work on Watergate.

My mom: Why are there only white kids in the IU marching band?
Me: …
Mom: There are black kids who go to IU!
Me: Mom, if you live in Indianapolis and you are good at marching band and think of going to IU, Grambling comes in the night and knocks you into sense.

You know what I really wish the world at large understood about academia? (And by world at large I mean doctor’s offices and car insurance companies and any other business that expects everyone to be able to sit at a desk and wait for a phone call or to take a random weekday morning off?)

You know what I love about Bluesky? I just for my video game/Star Wars news from a post from @elienyc.bsky.social , political and justice writer from
_The Nation_.

Also, other nerds: go watch the Fate of the Old Republic trailer. It’s amazing. I got chills.

I mean, I am biased, but still.

Mamdani may be mayor elect for NYC, but his video is as good as the presentation we had years ago on campus. Everyone who cares about overreach by ICE and border patrol should watch. Includes images of warrants ICE may duplicitously use and the ones that do let ICE in legally.

Would have been nice if Sen /Dr Cassidy had listened to folks who warned that RFK Jr was likely to do this before Cassidy ensured RFK’s confirmation.

Late to the conclusion is slightly better than never.

When the reckoning comes in the future, I’d still like to talk about leopards eating faces.

Every year since 1988, the United States has recognized World AIDS Day — until now.

Why not? Maybe because the Trump administration doesn’t want to acknowledge that its foreign aid cuts led to nearly 150,000 deaths from AIDS, according to Boston University researchers.

Shameful.

A post not about politics:

1. I feel like it should be much more widely known that batteries treated with bitterant don’t work in AirTags? (This fact explains *so* much.)

2. Why do they make pockets in women’s jeans such weird useless shapes? Lost pen wasn’t lost—just migrated to a weird corner.

I am really tired of the LMS’s limits (everything is a checklist, everything can be assessed with multiple choice questions, everyone grades based on points) steering my pedagogy in a million little ways.

One of us—me or the LMS— is a subject-matter expert with decades of teaching experience.

I’m teaching a new class this semester. Our campus LMS is Canvas. There is literally no way for me to write questions of the type normally used on exams to teach this class in Canvas. As it is, Canvas doesn’t allow exams, only quizzes.

If I call IT, they will just tell me Canvas can’t do that. 🤬

Last day of classes before our fall break. POTUS is calling for US military to hang Congresscritters.

(Also w/ a run-on sentence. I know that detail is not the most important, but it’s late enough in the semester that my grading brain is permanently turned on, so I can’t not see that part.)

Sometimes it’s so clear that I live in So Cal & work at a university relatively close to Disneyland.

Last week, as I was leaving campus, I saw a group of students jogging on campus and had to do a double take to confirm:

One of them was, in fact, carrying an (uningnited) light saber while jogging

We will not back any Senate primary candidate unless they call for Schumer to step down as Minority Leader.

If you’re as pissed as we are, join this campaign to rebuild the Democratic Party. 👇
Democratic leaders have failed us again. It's time to get new leaders.
After yet another capitulation by Chuck Schumer and Senate Democrats, it's clear we need new leadership capable of mounting a serious opposition to Trump's authoritarian regime. We're launching our la...
