I sum it up as "queer swashbuckling farce"!

I consider it "a romance" in the Walter Scott sense rather than "a novel". Tension between realism and fantasy is a meta element.

Adventure, but in a small area.

And comedy in multiple senses—most importantly, the happy ending.

I've been considering DeadGirlsWIP a dark romantic fantasy. That is, a fantasy novel with dark themes/events & a romantic storyline that ISN'T the main objective of the plot.

It is also probably my slowest burn romance to date.

Because magic is so prevalent, DeadGirlsWIP straddles the gap between medieval aesthetics & industrial-era amenities. Magic is used (to varying degrees) for sanitation, food prep, transportation, & industry... but bc magic is personal, it usually can't be used en masse.

Fire-talented mages often work in smithies, foundries, or other industrial settings. They manage flames & prevent disasters. But, if by coincidence there were no fire mages in an entire generation of townsfolk, a smith might need to outsource the job to a mage from another town.

For example, each state capital has a Gate: a permanent teleportation ring, all connected. They were created generations ago by a very potent teleportation mage, as a public benefit project. If one were destroyed or made inoperable, there's no guarantee anyone alive could 100% fix it.
