PhD student at UCL SSEES researching the experiences of Ukrainian refugees in the UK
Baby's first academic teaching staff ID. Thinking about my 20-year-old self today, who first fell in love with academia and felt like maybe she could belong here. I don't think she imagined she'd be teaching on a Politics course or doing a PhD in East European Studies, but life is funny like that.

Every article on feminist approaches to refugee studies is like "women have existed for centuries, but scholarship has only paid attention to this phenomenon for the past 20 years".

If you’re paying attention to the Supreme Court decision or Labour’s budgets or job cuts in UK universities or the creeping use of genAI in public life and you’re not already thinking about how we fight fascism then this is the time to start

If there's one thing I've learnt from the surreal experience of realising I'm a lesbian and breaking up with my boyfriend of 4 years who I currently live with, it's that I am friends with the most incredible people. I have felt so loved and safe and emotionally held by my friends this week.

Russia has kidnapped tens of thousands of Ukrainian children. Putin was indicted for this crime. Yale has a unit searching for them. Musk eliminated the funding.

I'm not saying I've been learning Ukrainian for too long, but I did just look at a sentence I wrote in English and think "this would be so much more coherent if English had a genitive case".

Perhaps NOW certaint leftists might finally recognise the imperialist aggression Ukraine is facing.

Because after the most inhumane meeting in the Oval Office yesterday it should be clear: Ukraine has now two imperialist powers circling over it like vultures

American statements in the Oval Office indistinguishable from Russian propaganda and celebrated by Russian propagandists.

This sh*tshow was not only disrespectful to president Zelensky: it was also a slap in the face to every person who has lost a loved one in this war, by two individuals who never even set foot in Ukraine.

For perspective, brothers Vasyl & Roman Ratushnyi both gave their lives for Ukraine's sake.
Even if the unlikely event of some sort of peace, Ukraine has already lost so many of its best people.

That alone is, & will forever remain, unforgivable for the tens of thousands of people who have lost loved ones.

Brothers Vasyl (28) & Roman (24) Ratushnyi both died while defending Ukraine.

My research profile is now up on the UCL website, which feels slightly surreal considering that this time last year I was stressing over PhD funding applications and had no idea whether I'd be able to move to London. Now I'm 4 months in, and so glad I made it here!

Turns out the final boss of academic stress is your relatives ending up in hospital just before every single deadline. The fact it's happened twice in the past three weeks (first my grandmother, then my dad) is a very strange coincidence.

I wrote a blog about turning 27 in half an hour, and some lessons I've learned lately about perfectionism, brought to you through the great parable of disaster cakes and my terrible sense of direction.

Ahead of turning 27 tomorrow, I decided to give in to my whimsical side and bake a purple cake. For those unfamiliar with Eliza lore, there were a solid three years in uni where I dressed in purple…

Decided to bake a purple cake for my birthday tomorrow to add a little whimsy to my life. Remembered half way through baking that I have a fan oven and need a lower temperature. Opened the oven to check on cake, and saw only darkness. It turns out taro extract goes black, not purple, when cooked.

This from an open letter from Ukrainian public figures outlining Russia’s true war aims. Now think: what would Putin most like the US to do in order to make his aims achievable? Maybe start threatening to commit its own land grabs and violations of international law?

Seen a few folks astonished by my lack of support for ChatGPT and similar. Because AI, right?

Yeah, no. What we have right now is glorified autocorrect. Glorified autocorrect that takes the energy of an entire city to do what it does, plus half of Lake Erie to cool down while it's doing it.
