"“Pray don't talk to me about the weather, Mr. Worthing. Whenever people talk to me about the weather, I always feel quite certain that they mean something else. And that makes me quite nervous.” Oscar Wilde was on to something here!

As a winter storm approaches and media begin to speak of "hunkering down," I'd like to state that I do not hunker!

After being exhorted by a doctor's office to "use the convenient patient portal," I was still not surprised to see that the list of my upcoming appointments is not accurate; in fact, an employee told me "Oh, well, that portal isn't always right". Technology = stupid.

In despair about the world, I turn to minor annoyances especially in speech. Currently being annoyed by the expression 'Suck it up, buttercup" because it sounds rude, dumb, and also unoriginal. If you say this to me, you go on a list!

Woke up thinking about teaching Chaucer, and his Reeve who says that no matter how old, all people have "four live coals, as I can show;

Our family tradition at Thanksgiving is to hold hands and sing "We Gather Together," the old Dutch hymn, though we sing it in English. Still it's always fun to see the reaction of people who are new to our gathering, because they don't expect it, but I don't think it's that weird. Everyone sang

Besides the tone deafness of having a lavish party during a govt shutdown, I can't stop thinking about the "Gatsby" theme. I mean, did they even know what that book is about? Was there a valley of ashes? A dead body in the pool at the end? Or are they celebrating their own carelessness?

My husband’s shoelaces came with this handy installation guide and frankly, I’m glad. How would we ever have managed without it?

Distracting Cats, Day 3:00. Oliver's nocturnal activities include moving things to the living room: used dryer balls, sponges, and the stopper for the guest bathroom tub. I had not included those items in my design plan for the room, but he has other ideas. Here he is, planning his next move.

Distracting Cats, Day 89? Not Stanley helping me put away groceries but knocking over a box of blueberries and then getting Ollie to bat them around as if I bought them new cat toys! Still running down rogue blueberries on the kitchen floor...
