All I hear when people say "if you're not constantly furious at the news, you don't care" is "if you're not overwhelming your nervous system to the point of exhaustion, you're doing it wrong".

It's ok to be working for change in a terrible context & take care of yourself so you can be functional.

A fundamental flaw with social media is that the overlap between "social media can be fun" and "social media can be profitable" is almost nil.

As they say, *ahem*, some personal news:

After 20 years in journalism, including a decade at CBC News, I'm moving on to something different.

I’m launching my own independent practice as a Data & Storytelling Strategist.

Yes, I'm giving up a stable job in order to hang up my own shingle.

Why?

I guarantee you have no idea where this short thread is going.
My husband was on the 2 train and a guy started braying about how Renee Good deserved to die and her "lesbian lover" did too. My husband got pissed and said, "You're absolutely disgusting." "Fuck you!" the guy said. "Fuck YOU!" my husband said. The guy left.

See? We just need to talk to each other.

It's "culturally unsafe" to have a Palestinian Aus author advocate against the systematic slaughter of hundreds of thousands of her people, but it's
"a good thing" for the president of apartheid Israel, which has committed daily massacres and mass starvation for 2yrs, to visit us. Unbearably racist.

Casual reminder that the myth of “pulling yourself up by your bootstraps” is a cruel hoax designed to convince poor people from all walks of life that the injustices they face are a result of their own actions, rather than an oppressive system rigged against them.

Have you tried 'Grace of Kings' by Ken Liu? Fantasy but it's DNA is Chinese history/mythology rather than LOTOR & European history.

The University of Oklahoma is a joke
It's not great that a student can turn in a bad essay but vaguely point to the Bible and religious beliefs as an excuse for not following the actual assignment and terrible writing. That's not what college is supposed to be.

The professor did nothing wrong but she was pulled off the course anyways.
