A few yards away from Schiffman, Finn Cervino of Queens was defacing a poster with a Sharpie. He included a web address for a website predicting the future of AI and wrote “This is not science fiction. This is reality.”

Did I waste my time writing Book 2 because it doesn't wholly fit my author "brand" (blech)? Should I have spent that time writing something more like Grey Dog instead? I don't think so. This was the book I needed to write. But I do wonder how it will be received if it makes it to the shelves.

The new book is a bit of a pivot for me. It is spec fiction, and definitely has moments of darkness, but I would not classify it as horror, and I don't think readers will either.

I must admit this makes me nervous. I worry that I will disappoint readers if my second novel isn't like my first.

Please note that this is not Flanagan hate! I like the majority of his work, especially Hush and Midnight Mass. And I'm not against the way he remixes literary inspiration to make what he makes- The Fall of the House of Usher is great fun. But his Hill House is not the Hill House of the book.

There are many things I like about Mike Flanagan's Haunting of Hill House, but I would like the whole series way more if it didn't pretend to be an adaptation of Shirley Jackson.

(And if it didn't have that cheesy final scene.)
